My darling girl,

I have learned that your powers have been unleashed. I am so happy for you. You will need help in learning how to control them. This is Bellona. She’s a familiar, and she’ll help you on your way. Trust her. With her, your father will think twice before he hurts you again. You have been my greatest joy. There’s so much more to you than you know. Soon, all will be revealed.

I love you.

Mom

I looked at the little purring kitten. “A familiar? I’m not a witch. Why would Mom send me a familiar?”

The little kitten raised her head. You’ll find out. Not quite yet. I’m here to protect you

A kitten? I wasn’t sure how. Protect me from whom?

Heavy footsteps approached the door.

She looked up at me. I think you know. You must be careful. He suspects

Cold chills crept down my spine. Suspects? Suspects what?

Then the door opened, and Dr. Lascar stepped into the room.

“Good morning, Rose. How are you feeling?” He looked at my lap. “Ah, yes. Headmaster Tarus said you had a new little fur ball.”

I petted Bellona’s head. “This is Bellona. My mom sent her to me, and Headmaster said I could keep her.”

“I never question the headmaster’s orders. He sees more than anyone.” Dr. Lascar came over to me and handed me a warm bag of blood. “This is Chosen blood. You need to drink it.”

I looked at the bag as if it were filled with poison. Fear snaked up my spine, and I shivered. The scratches on my head burned even more, as if Father was hurting me again.

Dr. Lascar raised his eyebrow. “Rose? Whatever’s the matter?”

Bellona climbed up onto my chest and pressed her nose against mine. Her tail twitched behind her. Drink, Rose. You need to heal

It was as if Bellona had mesmerized me. My fangs lengthened. She sat back down on her haunches, but her eyes never left mine. I felt like I was in a trance.

I dipped my fangs into the bag, drinking the spicy liquid, sucking and sucking. Healing, tingling sensations moved through me and the stinging on my scalp faded away. In its place, defiance coursed through my veins.

Dr. Lascar grinned. “Feeling better?”

I nodded. “Yes.” I handed him the empty bag. “Thank you.”

Bellona purred. Aren’t you glad you did that

I stroked her fur. Thank you for the push

Dr. Lascar put his hand on my forehead. “The blood seems to have healed you. Your two knights in shining armor are waiting outside for you. Do you feel you could get out of bed?”

I looked down at my hospital gown. “Yes. I think so.”

“Let’s see if you can walk first.”

Bellona moved to the end of the bed as Dr. Lascar gently pulled back the blanket. He stuck out his arm. “Please, let me assist you.”

I linked my arm through his as I put my bare feet on the floor and stood. My legs didn’t wobble as he led me around the room.

“Now try taking a step by yourself, my dear.”

I nodded and took one step, then another.
