Chapter 16

It took some doing to convince Tilde that it would be best if she didn’t go with us. “But it was my idea,” she kept insisting. “And Sage knows me. She’ll be more likely to open up with me there.”

“You’re her former Sunday School teacher,” Pat said. “You really think she’s going to open up about sexual escapades in front of you?”

It was only after we promised to go by her place and fill her in that she reluctantly agreed to our going without her.

Privately, I wasn’t so sure about Pat’s presence, either, as I didn’t know how to explain both of us showing up. But when I mentioned it to Pat, she said after that newspaper article, my wanting to bring a friend with me would make sense. Plus, Tiki would be there, and she was always welcome.

Tiki jumped up and wagged her tail at the sound of her name. She looked at me and tilted her head, and I could sense her letting me know that she would most definitely be a big help with the investigation.

How could I possibly say no to that adorable little face?

Normally, I would have waited to go see Sage—maybe even tried calling her first—but I was feeling too much pressure to get my name cleared sooner rather than later. It was like there was a giant clock hovering right above me, ticking away, each second as loud as a gong. The longer this went on, the harder it would become for people to believe I was innocent. I had to move fast.

So, once we were able to convince Tilde not to come AND politely get her to leave (both activities took far longer than I wanted), Pat, Tiki, and I finally got ourselves loaded up in Pat’s car to drive to Sage’s. Since I’d already had more than I normally drank, Pat decided to drive.

Luckily, Sage was in the phone book. She was living in a large, well-known apartment complex near downtown Redemption, so she was easy to find. Well, the apartment complex was easy to find. It took a bit to find her specific apartment, as the complex was divided into separate buildings, and there didn’t seem to be a directory anywhere. It helped that none of the security doors were working. Two were busted and one was propped open. It all took time, though, so when we finally reached her door, it was getting close to seven.

“Maybe we should have called first,” I said, feeling a pang of apprehension as we stood in front of her door. “I didn’t realize it was getting so late, especially to just show up like this.”

Pat gave me a look. “Well, it’s a little late to turn back now. We’re here, so we might as well see if she’ll talk to us.” She loudly knocked on the door.

There was a long silence, which made me wonder if Sage was even there. Pat was just picking up her hand to knock again when the door opened.
