Chapter Twelve

TUESDAY NIGHT

Rags followed me as I padded into the living room wearing my purple fuzzy slippers. I’d just changed out of my break-in clothes and had tossed them in a corner to deal with later, then put on sweats and a tee.

“I opened the lock.” Raj leaned forward from his position on the couch and set the closed diary on the coffee table. He straightened then raised an eyebrow at me. “Love, why don’t you explain why you have marbles on your windowsills?”

I cleared my throat. “Home security.”

Tara sat on the rug by an armchair and wrapped her arms around her knees as she grinned. “Any bad guy climbing in through any one of your windows would find himself flat on his butt after knocking off the cup. Not to mention they’d be loud enough to wake you up.”

Rags twined herself around my ankles as I shoved my hands into the pockets of my sweatpants. “That’s the idea.”

“When did you have the security lights put up?” she asked.

I shrugged, knowing I was opening myself up for more questions, even as I said, “Liam helped me put them up the other day, when he stopped by to tell me it was okay to open my café again.”

Raj perked up. “Do tell.”

I figured a change in direction might put off his desire to learn more. “Hot chocolate or herbal tea before we get started?”

“Tea would be delightful.” Raj at the end of his seat cushion. “Don’t think I’ll forget about our dear detective.”

“I love your homemade chocolate.” Tara shifted her position on the floor. “Need help?”

I waved her off as I continued to my small kitchen. “It won’t take me long.”

Tara and Raj joined me in the kitchen and sat on the stools at the island while I made the hot chocolate with whole milk, heavy cream, espresso powder, and dark chocolate.

“Okay, love.” Raj crossed his legs and rested his hands on his knee. “Time to tell us about your visit with Mr. Honeybuns.”

Tara smirked as I looked at him with mock horror. “Honeybuns?”

Raj made a motion with his hand to move on. “Stop stalling.”

I rolled my eyes. “He helped me with the lights, and I served him lunch.”

Raj leaned forward. “Tell us about the flirting.”

I hoped my face wasn’t as red as I thought it must be. “We mostly concentrated on putting up the lights. That’s all.”

Raj raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Mostly?”

“Oh, pleeease,” Tara said. “You’re not fooling us.”

I heated hot water then steeped white pear tea for Raj. I broke down and told them about a couple of his flirty comments—but not everything.

Still, that seemed to appease them. I popped some fresh popcorn that filled the kitchen with its delicious smell. I topped it generously with Amish butter and lightly added pink Himalayan salt.

I changed topics. “Has Sophie come in for a yoga class, Raj?”

He rolled his eyes. “I was ready with a bug to stick in Sophie’s gym bag, and she didn’t even have the courtesy to show up like she scheduled.
