“Ouch!” I said, and narrowed my eyes at him. “What did you do that for?”

He leaned toward me so he could whisper, “We should have gotten the practice field today.”

“Today was our day,” I reminded him. “We agreed on every other day. Why would you have gotten it?”

“Because you never use it,” he said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked.

“None of you were even playing today. Why should you get the field if you aren’t going to practice on it?”

“Who said we weren’t practicing?”

“Eating snacks and jumping around is not practicing. You do the exact same thing on the blacktop when it’s not your turn on the field,” Nelson said. “It doesn’t seem right that you’re allowed to take up time on the field if you’re not even using it for the right reasons.”

“We know exactly what we’re doing,” I told him.

“Yeah, a whole lot of nothing,” he said, as his face grew more and more red. He was losing his temper.

“If you say so,” I said, and shrugged as if it were no big deal, which made it an even bigger deal to him. “Maybe we’re preparing our secret weapon.”

Nelson ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Focus on your own team,” I said. “I’ve got mine under control. All will be revealed on game day when we unleash our secret weapon. Now, I’m trying to get this worksheet done, so if you could let me get back to that, I’d appreciate it.”

The funny thing was that we really did have a secret weapon. It might have looked like we weren’t practicing, but when you had a team that worked together, you were unstoppable. And I couldn’t wait to see the boys try to change that.
