Chapter 14

ALEX

Tristan had a room of his own in the back of Brickstone. It’s a good thing he did, considering I wasn’t in the mood to drink with anybody else. The music vibrated through the walls but I still felt alone. Not even Tristan keeping me company could get me away from the numbness that ran through my body.

“You should drink that. It’ll make you feel better.”

Tristan pointed out the glass of whiskey in my hand. My throat was dry and my nerves were shot. But for whatever reason, I couldn’t bring the alcohol up to my lips.

I set the drink down then moved over to the side of the room. Tristan sat calmly while I paced back and forth.

“How are they?” he asked.

“Roach is critical but stable. Same for the man he was with. If they make it, it’ll be a long time before they talk.”

I shook my head, finally coming to the realization of what I saw.

“He shot them,” I muttered. “They worked for him and he didn’t hesitate to do it.”

“A man pushing Freezeout like him, I’d expect him to be capable of anything. That’s the kind of lowlife punk you’re dealing with, Alex.”

Tristan got up from his seat and put his hands on my shoulders. I was still too distracted to look him in the eye.

“What’s on your mind?”

“Him,” I said. “He’s on my mind. I can still see his face. I’ve never seen that kind of disdain before. The kind of arrogance like nobody else mattered.”

“Considering what the guy did, that’s not surprising.”

“He got away…”

“I know. I’m sorry. I should’ve seen those bikes coming. I was too focused—”

“Don’t apologize, Tristan. You did everything you could. I know you did.”

“Hey!”

He shook me suddenly and knocked me out of the daze I didn’t realize I was in.

“Relax,” he said, a soft smile on his lips. “Everything will be all right. Just because he got away today doesn’t mean he’s gone for good. We’ll get him.”

“I know. It just… It burns me up inside. Even Roach doesn’t deserve something like that.”

“Alex—”

I moved my face to his. My lips pressed hard on his and my tongue pushed between his teeth.

“I don’t wanna think about him tonight,” I whispered into his mouth. “I just wanna forget what I saw. I just… I just…”

“It’s okay,” he said, gently putting his hand on my chin. “I understand.”

The way Tristan stared with those deep blue eyes of his did exactly what I wanted them to do. I forgot about everything. There were no drugs. There were no men in the hospital. There was no dealer on the loose in the streets. There was just us, alone together. And nothing was holding us back.

I put my hands around his back and pulled him closer to me. His jacket fell off and I enjoyed the feeling of his hard muscles underneath my palms. I peeled his shirt off completely, our lips wrapped together the entire time, and did the same with my shirt.

We pressed our bodies against each other.
