Lucius and I talked about his time in college while Sawyer and Branson exhausted themselves playing ball. Lucius had graduated high school in England, but went to college at NYU, then decided to stay in the US.

I was about to ask him something else when the others joined us. They sat on the grass, panting but looking content. Their bodies gleamed with sweat, each perfect muscle begging to be touched.

“What I wouldn’t give for a beer,” Sawyer said, lying full on his back.

Lucius threw him a warning glance, then his gaze flicked to Branson, who didn’t fail to notice.

The smile Branson had been wearing immediately flattened. “You don’t have to treat me with kids’ gloves.”

“We don’t?” Sawyer asked, a hint of sarcasm in his tone.

Lucius’s eyes bugged as he pointedly glared at Sawyer.

“Stop that.” Branson punched Lucius on the shoulder, none-too-gently.

Lucius pulled back, rubbing the spot. “Hey! We’ve agreed that we would have none of that.”

Branson’s nostrils flared. He seemed about to say something, but he bit down on his lower lip, fangs showing, stood, and walked away.

“You know better than to talk about food around him,” Lucius reproached Sawyer.

Sawyer huffed. “I was talking about beer, not food.”

“Same difference.” Lucius got up next and left.

“Such drama queens.” Sawyer leaned on one elbow and let his red eyes rove all over me. “Thank you,” he said after a moment.

“For what?”

“For this place. For the amazing sex. For everything.” His jet-black skin shone like perfectly polished obsidian. Behind him, his tail lazily ran back and forth over the grass as if enjoying the texture.

“You should be more careful with Branson,” I said.

“What? You too? I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“I know you didn’t.”

He seemed surprised at this admission.

“I haven’t been here long, but I can see how harmony is maybe the most crucial ingredient to make things work.”

He reclined back, resting his head on top of his hands as his elbows jutted out. “I’m aware of that. I wasn’t thinking when I said it, and probably Branson would have thought nothing of it, if not for Lucius.”

“You’re also right about that.”

“A woman that agrees with me. Very refreshing.”

I stretched to my full height and cracked my neck.

“I like the new outfit.”

After our delicious foursome, I replaced my yoga pants and loose T-shirt with a pair of shorts and a tank top.

“I’d love to see you in a dress, though.” His red eyes focused on my legs. “Something you would wear to a party, something tight and revealing that I would enjoy tearing off later.”

His rumble of a voice sent a shiver over my arms as I imagined a night of dancing and drinks and finally…

A somber feeling came suddenly over me.

“What is it?” Sawyer asked. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No, not at all. It’s just that I think I understand Branson better now.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that I thought of going dancing with you in that dress you mentioned, and that made me think of music, and the fact that I’ll probably never hear any again.
