I came to slowly, like I had been stuck in mud and left to bake in the sun. “Desert pie,” I mumbled.

“Zam, Zam, talk to me.” Lila tugged on my ears, yanking my head up. There was no light, we were in complete darkness. Maybe I’d died after all?

I couldn’t feel anything, and after the pain that had erupted through my body, I wasn’t going to complain about that. But my muscles were sloppy at best.

“I’m alive, I think,” I said. “Where are we?”

“It’s one of the offshoot tunnels,” Lila whispered. “The other tunnel collapsed completely, and then Asag was howling with laughter, saying that he won. I heard him tell his demons to come and get Lilith for him.”

I lay there, Lila holding my head tight. My tail twitched. Sure, I’d managed to shift into my house cat form, and stay alive, but at what cost? How long would it take for me to catch my wind? What would happen to Reyhan and Fen while we got our shit together?

“He thinks he killed us,” I said softly.

“Yeah, I think he does. We’ve been here in this spot for over an hour, and nothing has come at us. Not one thing.” She breathed out a heavy sigh. “It’s good. We need to rest. But it won’t last. Not if he’s sending the demons to get Lilith.”

Even though I’d just come to, I knew she was right. “Sleep for a bit, then we’ll go.”

Lila curled around me. “I wish we had some țuică.”

I smiled, but even that felt difficult. “Me too.”

Sleep was only at the edge of my body, so it was nothing to pass out again. This time I dreamed and knew I was in the dreamscape.

The Emperor, my grandfather, waited for me.

“Old bastard,” I greeted him appropriately for his role in my life.

“Zamira, finding trouble still?” He raised his white eyebrows up nearly to his hairline.

“What are you doing here?” I didn’t need to acknowledge that yes, I was in trouble. We all knew that was a key gift of mine.

“I don’t know. I assumed you called me?” We stood next to a building that seemed to be within the demon city. There were no monsters here.

“Can you help me?” I asked. “Is there anything more about Asag that will help me defeat him?”

My grandfather closed his eyes and tipped his head back and forth as though he were trying to loosen up his thoughts. “He cannot be killed. Demons can’t be killed, not by mortal means. They can kill one another. So your only hope is to banish him or bind him within an item.” He shook his head. “Not that we need more cursed items in this world. The thirteen that there are, are plenty.”

“What about a weapon like the flail, would that work?” I asked, choosing to ignore the comment about thirteen cursed items. I didn’t need to borrow trouble, I had enough of my own.

He looked at me, eyebrows draw in tight. “You mean the sword you carry? Yes, that in theory could destroy a demon’s essence.
