We made it to the far end of the underground garden, which used to be the garden of the old witch castle, before we were stopped. Apparently, these guards aren’t going to let us in. Too bad, but they’re doing their job, so it’s not like we should have expected something else.

“Where do we go now?” Aideen looks around, and then looks at me. “Where do you want to go?”

I look around too, and my eyes fall on one section of the garden that has more plants, which should not be able to grow underground, but nothing should be able to grow down here. The magic that’s used to protect the castle and the old garden are the only reason that anything will grow here.

I point to the more secluded area and we walk to it. It’s not really a maze, it’s too small for that, but it does give us a little privacy, a little spot to be away from everything.

We sit down on a patch of soft grass, and I lean back, closing my eyes for a few moments. I know that we’re underground, far, far underground, but if I close my eyes it almost feels like we’re outside in the open. Probably even more magic.

“Long day?” Aideen’s voice is quiet.

I let out a slow breath, trying to relax, put everything from my mind. Aideen isn’t my family, she’s my friend, and really close to Rune’s family, but she’s not my family and that sometimes makes it easier to talk to her. “Rune got a death threat in the mail today.”

“What?” Aideen nearly jumps up, but I grab her arm, making sure she doesn’t run off. Her family has protected Rune’s family for centuries and the instinct is still very strong in her, and, you know, her being friends with us. Dragons are very protective in general.

“He wasn’t harmed. Nobody was harmed. It was just a letter, nothing more.”

Aideen properly sits down again and looks at me intensely, heat coming off her skin. “You should have told me sooner. Fucking hell. Scaring me like that.”

“No.” I keep my voice clipped, carefully shaking my head.

“Yes.” She widens her eyes at me, the black from her pupils taking up more of her red eyes, her heat intensifying. “You’re my friends. You should tell me when something like that happens. When you’re in danger.”

“No.” I lean on my elbows. “I want... I don’t want everything to be about that, about my life as a queen. I just want... I just want a friend right now. I want ‘Aideen the friend’, not ‘Aideen the protector of the dragon royal family’. I just...”

She lets out a soft sound, the heat fading and her stance deflating. “You always have ‘Aideen the friend’ when you’re with me. I promise.” She leans closer and then lies down next to me, mirroring my position. “I just worry about you because you’re my friend. Will you tell me what happened?”

I sigh, nodding. “Rune got a letter. It had a spell in it that would activate as soon as the letter was opened and light hit it.
