CHAPTER XII

“What are you doing out here, Nessa? You mentioned earlier that you were trying to help your people, but you are the only karn I have seen so far,” Jak asked as they approached the waterfall.

Nessa let out a low growl. “My people,” she said, sounding bitter. “I suppose...I am trying to do what you are trying to do.”

“Make a village?” he asked.

“Yes. My people are scattered. They wander the island, alone or in very small groups. They fight each other. They fight everyone. They fall prey to the embyr.”

“How so?”

For the first time since he had met her, Nessa looked truly uncomfortable. They found the waterfall and stepped into it.

“The embyr are magical, powerfully magical. They are few in number, though. I’ve never seen one. Only heard descriptions. But they have the ability to control my people. They take over their minds and make them slaves, incapable of doing anything but what they are told by the embyr.”

“Oh...that’s horrible,” Jak said quietly as he considered the implications of that. “I’m so sorry.”

Nessa gave her head a sharp shake. “I appreciate it but there is nothing to be done about it...yet. That is part of why I am trying to reunite my people. But it is so...I am losing heart,” she admitted. “I haven’t even seen any of my people for days now, longer actually. The last one I met I had to kill. He forced my hand. He was mad with battle-lust. Now, I mostly just help the exiles I come across. Like you.”

“Would you consider joining my tribe?” he asked. “I would very much like to have you.”

She looked at him closely, and he marveled at her strange beauty, the water running down her fit, tall, green body. “Would you like me to join your tribe or become your mate?”

“Both,” he admitted.

Her eyes widened a little. “Truly? That’s a bold confession.”

“Is it? You’re an amazing woman. I desire you. For my tribe and for myself.”

“And your other women...they would accept me?”

“There would need to be more discussion if it were really happening, but yes, I believe so. We have spoken of it specifically. They seemed receptive. I know for a fact Niri would welcome you with open arms.”

Nessa fell silent for several long moments, looking down at the pool the waterfall let out into. “You were the first of another race who agreed to fuck me,” she said. “I’ve often wanted to know what it would be like, but could never find anyone. I knew it would be unlikely but possible to find a human or an elf I was attracted to who would have sex with me, but I didn’t think it was anything more than a fantasy that I could find someone that I was very attracted to, was attracted to me, and would have sex with me, and would want me in...that way. As a mate.” She looked at him suddenly. “We could never reproduce, obviously.”

“I am okay with that,” Jak replied, “if you are.
