Chapter 33

Inside the hidden room, Brady breathed hard, trying to control his anger. He had interrogated people before, but never someone who had shot him. Such opportunities weren’t allowed in normal police proceedings. But there wasn’t anything normal about this interrogation or the situations surrounding it. The rules that governed law enforcement officers had been locked outside and ignored.

Andreas sat in a metal foldout chair with his hands cuffed behind his back. He kept his posture stiff. His firm jaw tightened as his eyes studied his surroundings. His pale face and death-blue lips were almost translucent in the dimly lit room. Thin blue veins spider-webbed across his hairless scalp. Under most circumstances, Brady would have believed his prisoner to be a vampire or a zombie instead of a human servant, but no zombie looked this good and any vampire would have already used his strength to break free and attack or escape.

The magical doorway they had entered from the alley was invisible once again. Eva stood in one corner of the room with her arms crossed. She remained silent, watching Brady pace back and forth. His hands formed into tight fists.

Brady turned and approached Andreas, staring fiercely into the vampire servant’s eyes. The hunger of Brady’s inner wolf wished to break through Brady’s human façade and rip the vampire servant to shreds. It took every ounce of his strength to restrain himself.

The smugness Andreas had exhibited in the alley had vanished. Perhaps he understood the danger that stood before him. Whoever had entered the alley to rescue him couldn’t find him. Even if his hands weren’t cuffed behind his back, he’d have no more advantage.

“Why did they send you to kill Kailey?” Brady asked through gritted teeth. His harsh voice almost sounded a growl. Around his eyes shimmered the glow of the wolf wishing to break free.

Despite his obvious fear, Andreas didn’t break eye contact. He swallowed hard. Long streaks of sweat trickled down his brow, his cheeks, and he shivered slightly.

Brady lurched closer. His teeth altered with more pointiness. “Tell me. Now!”

Andreas jerked back and gasped. Terror seized him. For a few seconds he uselessly struggled to break the cuffs. He spoke with a thick Slavic accent. “They didn’t send me to kill your girlfriend.”

Brady leaned back slightly and frowned. “Then who?”

“You,” Andreas replied in a soft voice. He closed his eyes momentarily and when he reopened them, he stared down at Brady’s feet and brooded.

“But you used regular bullets. You know what I am. Hell, the founding vampires know what I am.”

Andreas nodded, panting. Brady couldn’t believe it, but the man seemed to have paled even more. Andreas turned and spat on the floor. “Yeah. I know. They assured me that silver bullets were in the gun.”

Eva glanced at Brady in surprise. “They set him up.”

“What?” Brady asked.

“They want him dead,” she replied.

Brady turned his attention back to Andreas.

“It’s true,” Andreas said. “It’s why those people entered the alley. They returned to kill me, not retrieve me. I know it.
