The next morning, I was surprised to find Vi had overslept once again.

"Vi, wake up!"

"What?" She shot out of bed and glanced at her nightstand. Her phone was there, plugged in and fully charged. We couldn't blame Fox this time.

"Why didn't your alarm go off?" I asked.

Vi groaned and slapped her forehead. "I turned off all sounds and notifications yesterday because I didn't want to be disturbed at the library. I must have forgotten to turn everything back on."

Like a well-practiced pit stop crew, I got Vi dressed, fed, and loaded into the car in record time. Unfortunately, we ended up stuck behind a long line of cars once we hit Main Street.

By the time I pulled up to the front of Cranbrook, classes had already started.

Vi pouted. "I'm definitely tardy today. My perfect attendance record is ruined."

I nudged her out of the car. "Go on, you're late enough as it is. I'll go to the office and sign you in."

When I walked into the office, the secretary was nowhere to be found. She must have left in a hurry because she didn't even bother to log out of her computer. Her desk was still as messy as the last time I was here, but I found the tardy sign-in sheet easily enough. I added Vi's name and the time I dropped her off.

Suddenly, I got a flash of inspiration. I dug around in my purse until I found a business card with Detective Miller's email and phone number on it. Glancing down the empty hallway, I made sure that nobody was coming in before I slid into the secretary's seat. I opened up her email client and typed a quick email mentioning Nate, Kevin, and Sheryl and sent it to Detective Miller.

I heard footsteps approaching the office from the hall as well as voices from behind the headmaster's door. I shot up to my feet and scrambled to close the email client. My heart thudded as I realized that I was trapped in here. I glanced around in a panic as I looked for a way out.

My eyes landed on the window. Thank goodness the office was on the first floor. The doorknob on the headmaster's door turned. I had to get out of here. I threw one leg over the windowsill and fell to the ground in an undignified pile.

I crouched down low and held my breath as people entered the office. They were so close that it sounded like they were talking directly above where I was hiding. If I moved, they were sure to hear the twigs and leaves crack beneath my feet. All I could do was sit still until they left the room.

"I want you to get rid of everything," said a man's voice.

"Even the paintings?" asked a woman's voice.

"Everything. This is should have been my office a long time ago. If he hadn't stolen it from me... I want a fresh start, free of Michael's influence."

My eyes widened when I realized that it was Nate.
