âIâm baaack,â he called out as he stepped through the door.
But there was no answer. Kaede usually came running out to greet him. He gave the living room a long look, but there was no sign of her.
âShe asleep?â
He took off his shoes and went inside. He stopped to wash his hands and gargle, then stepped into the living room.
Kaede and two cats were taking a late nap in front of the TV.
âWelcome back.â
The voice came from the kitchen, so he turned toward it. Rio was standing by a pot on the stove, stirring the contents with a ladle to keep anything from burning on the bottom.
âWhat are you doing, Futaba?â
âMaking curry.â
âDressed like that?â
Rio was wearing her white lab coat.
âI donât want it splashing on me.â
âNot an appetizing visualâ¦â
She totally looked like a science mage. A poker-faced, theory-spouting, logical witch. It was hard to believe she wasnât concocting some dangerous drugs in that pot.
âIâm following the recipe exactly, so it should be fine.â
She had a cookbook open next to the pot. One Sakuta had bought when he and Kaede first started living together and he needed to learn how to cook. He hadnât used it much lately and wasnât even sure where heâd put it last.
âUh, so Maiâ¦?â
Kaede was sound asleep on the living room floor, but there was no sign of Mai.
âSheâs reading a script in your room. She said to send you in once you got back.â
âOkay, Iâll just go change.â
He couldnât feel comfortable wearing his school uniform in the house. It just felt gross.
âI always undress the moment I get home.â
âI did not need to know that,â Rio said. She never took her eyes off the curry.
Sakuta went to his door and knocked. âMai, can I come in?â he called.
ââ¦â¦â
No answer.
Heâd followed the proper procedure, so if Mai happened to be changing, she had only herself to blame.
Hoping against hope something like that would happen, Sakuta opened the door.
ââ¦â¦â
He found Mai immediately. She was lying on her back on his bed. Totally relaxed posture, eyes scanning the script in her hand.
She was wearing a hoodie and loungewear that came to just below the knee. A rare glimpse of her calves without the usual black tights over them.
ââ¦â¦â
The look on her face was very intense. Focused like a laser, to the point where it affected the whole vibe of the room, making the very air tense. There was no way he could possibly interrupt.
Doing his best to not make a sound, he stepped inside, carefully closing the door behind him. Then he waited on his knees in the corner. The pressure Mai was radiating inspired that level of formality.
ââ¦â¦â
He watched her chest rhythmically rise and fall. Proof she was living. She was blinking regularly, so it definitely didnât seem like sheâd fallen asleep with her eyes open.
Not wanting to bother her, he searched for a way to pass the time. He looked around the room, and it was decidedly tidy. She really had cleaned the place. Even that three-month-old manga magazine heâd left in the corner was now neatly stacked on his desk.
