It’s Complicated

MAUDIE LOOKS MISERABLE, and there isn’t time to sing the “Good Day” song.

The bridesmaid dress she is wearing was picked out by a person who wasn’t thinking straight. Her friend Myra, the bride, is normally a reasonable person. You just don’t know what stress can do to a bride, I guess.

The dress has long puffy sleeves and Maudie has to wear a floppy hat that has flowers on it.

“Just kill me now,” she says as Lumie and I walk her to the car. Lumie likes the flowing part of the long dress—she keeps trying to catch it.

“Tell me the truth, Olive. Do I look stupid?”

I’m trying to think of a word other than stupid.

Dumb.

Brain-dead.

Those are worse.

I take a big breath. “You look pretty stupid, but you won’t be the only one.” There are three other bridesmaids.

Lumie takes a swipe at the hem of the dress as Maudie gets in the car.

“It will be over soon,” I say, hoping that helps.

Actually, it was just beginning.
