Afterwards we walked along the flat, rocky top of the hill until we reached the edge of the forest. We looked down on the trees that spread out in endless waves. A trail came out of the woods and we followed it. We saw a fence of rough pine logs on one side of the path. We walked along the fence. Ahead of us stood an arched gate made of large logs. As we got closer I could make out a native name carved into the heavy cross beam. Inside I noticed a number of low picket fences forming small rectangles and suddenly I understood that we had come to the cemetery. My hand lay on the gate and I was ready to pull back the latch and enter. “Look Fiona,” I said, “Most of the graves are fenced in.”
“Hmm, I was wondering if this might be a graveyard,” Fiona said. Suddenly I felt an unseen force jerk my hand away from the latch. It felt like the wing beat of a bird. Now I could not open the gate. After all, I was a stranger here, but I could feel dark eyes following me from under the trees. “Yes, this is the cemetery,” I said, “But I think we better not go inside,” Fiona nodded and we began to retrace our footsteps.
When I looked up I saw the old-time village before me. Round dwellings with dome shaped roofs stood down by the shore. They were covered with sheets of birch bark and mats of woven rushes hung in the doorways. The sun glittered on the lake while naked children played by the water. Women in fringed buckskin dresses tended the open fires. A group of men hauled fish from a beached canoe. And the same dogs we had passed on our climb up the hill lay dozing in front of the lodges. I knew I had touched the memory of lives gone by.
We made our way back across the top of the hill. Soon a distant rumbling filled the air and Fiona and I turned to each other. We could now see the lake again and on the horizon we noticed great, flashing clouds rolling in towards us. “Pinesiwak,” I murmured.
“What did you say?”
“I said thunderbirds in the language of our people.” The fast-moving storm clouds already covered half the sky and lightning flashed and bathed the lake in a greenish light. A look of fear came over Fiona. I could feel her fear spread out to me. Below us we could see the road winding its way to the shore.
“We need to get off this hill as quickly as possible,” Fiona said. So right there we scrambled down the steep side of the hill as best we could and didn’t slow down till we reached the road and the first houses. A man was unloading a T.V. from his truck and a woman dressed in bright purple, the same colour as her house, carried an armful of pots and pans through the door.
