CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
CARRIANNE LOOKED with interest around the homey bunker. They had finished their meal and were awaiting Sheshbazzarâs return. He had promised them answers but said there was something he needed to attend to first. Agent Raymond looked over at Nolan.
âWhy do you think he lured us here?â
Nolan shrugged. âI wouldnât call it âlured,â but I imagine heâs just nervous. He had nothing to do with wounding Townes, so heâs probably scared for all the same reasons we are.â
âHe wasnât just âwounded.â It was an assassination attempt,â said Raymond testily. âLetâs be clear and call things what they are. And we donât know that he wasnât involved.â
âWell, heâll be back soon to tell us why weâre here, so why donât we not speculate?â
âLetâs hope he gives answers. So far heâs raised more questions than he has given answers.â With that statement, Nolan was in complete agreement.
After a few moments, Sheshbazzar walked back into the room, and the occupants watched him uneasily.
âI think weâd all like to know why weâre here,â said Nolan, and Sheshbazzar nodded.
âYes, you have earned that right. I will enlighten you now.â He sat on a floral sofa. âWhat would you like to know?â
Nolan looked at the others, surprised, before turning back to Sheshbazzar. âWell, I just assumed youâd tell us whatever is behind all of this. We have lots of questions, but I think it would simplify things if you just told your story from the beginning.â
âTell us about the ship,â said Raymond. âWhat happened?â
Sheshbazzar sighed. âVery well. You have to understand that this does not come easily to me. I have spent a lifetime protecting these secrets at all costs. But I am moving into a different realm of my high calling, and therefore there are things that I am going to have to share. I will do so as necessity dictates, but realize that this does not come easily for me.â
Nolan nodded. âWe understand. Weââ
âNot all of us are so quick to accept your blind assurances that all is okay,â Raymond interrupted. âYou know as well as I do that American lives were lost while on a UN-chartered mission at sea. Why donât you start there? Stop skirting the real issue and tell us whatâs going on. What is your connection to the Ake-Baylon and what was its cargo?â
Nolan, Carrianne, and Seldon looked at each other in confusion, but Sheshbazzar ignored them and nodded. âVery well. Weâll start there. The Ake-Baylon is, of course, my ship, as your government agents have discovered by now. I own it and dozens of others, all purchased through a network of business conglomerates. We use themââ
âWhy are they purchased in such a shady way,â interrupted Raymond, âif all of your dealings are on the level?â
Sheshbazzar looked confused. âShady? On the level? I do not understand.â
Nolan smiled and translated. âHe means that if your business ventures are without any ill intent, like criminal activities, then why do you go to such extraordinary measures to keep them secret?â
âAh, I see now.
