Chapter 15

The gown my maids dressed me in was more elaborate than anything I’d ever worn. They pulled the corset so tightly that I could scarcely breathe. The short breaths I was able to pull in left me light headed and feeling trapped in my own skin.

I hadn’t worn this many layers... ever. They had covered me from head to toe, leaving nothing but my hands and face visible. Did King Gallagher have a thing against skin? I’d protest and rebel against the outfit just to piss them off, but I didn’t know how Gallagher would react. If he was anything like his sons, anything could set him off. Better to err on the safe side until I had all the information. Then I could fuck all his plans up.

My lips ticked up at the thought, and then I grimaced as the maid pulled my long locks into an elaborate hairdo, pinned and decorated with more jewels than I’d ever worn. I didn’t even know I owned any of the gemstones they were putting in my hair. The necklace and earrings they adorned me with, each weighing more than their fair share, were also foreign to me.

When the maids finished dolling me up to perfection, or what they thought was perfection, they led me out of my bedroom and down to the formal dining room. Callahan and his father were already seated at the table. As I approached, both of them stood from the table.

When Callahan moved to my chair and pulled it out for me, I almost died laughing on the spot. The insanity of what was happening right now had my head all twisted around. This had to be a dream, some wacky drug induced dream in which Callahan actually had manners.

“My dear,” King Gallagher began his hands moving with his words as we became seated, “I want to start off by apologizing for what my sons have done. There is no excuse for their behavior, and I did not raise them to abuse their women in such a way. Their mother, gods rest her soul, was a gentle woman, but not the motherly type.”

I picked up my wine glass and gave a noncommittal nod. What the actual fuck? If I was going to get through this dinner I had to have some kind of alcohol helping me. There was no way I wanted to deal with either of them completely sober. With that thought, I drained half the glass before putting it down.

Callahan reached out and placed a hand on top of mine, a loving smile on his face. His mouth moved, but his hands were otherwise occupied. “I cannot hope to ever make up for my past actions, Georgia. But I promise you, from here on out, I will treat you with nothing but the love and respect that you deserve.”

Gag me.

If Callahan wasn’t parroting what his father had told him to say, I’d eat my shoe. The likelihood that Callahan would become a doting husband was lower than my chances of sprouting wings and taking flight to get away from here.
