Standing outside of Adiah's apartment, I questioned whether or not I should go inside. I wanted nothing more than to check on Corinne and make sure she was okay. When Adiah forced me to leave, she was still in and out of consciousness.

I hoped that she was better, but feared if she was completely healed she would just go back to being mad at me again. It was a very real possibility. This was the same woman who had told me multiple times in the last twenty-four hours that she didn't want anything to do with me. There would be no way of knowing whether or not she would throw me out until I went inside.

"I was wondering if you would be back," Adiah said, coming around the corner wearing a night gown and a bonnet. She looked like she was ready for bed, which I could only assume meant Corinne was doing a lot better.

"How is she doing," I asked.

"Ask her yourself," Adiah nodded, taking a sip of her tea. "She's in there. Was awake the last time I checked."

I took a deep breath in. Let it out slow, but still felt overwhelmed by a paralyzing anxiety. Walking in there would be easy. The hard part was deciding what to say.

"You care about her," Adiah asked, flopping down on the couch. She looked like she was about to get cozy and start a movie. "Doesn't take a witch with elevated intuition to figure that out."

I looked at Adiah and asked her, "How am I supposed to prove that to her when she doesn't want to hear it? I doubt she's interested in anything I have to say."

"You sure about that?"

"She told me to pretend like I never met her. Never wanted to me to talk to her again."

"Was that before or after you saved her life," Adiah raised her brow inquisitively.

She was right. I brought her here and got her the help she needed. Had I not brought her to Adiah, Corinne would have ended up in the morgue. At the same time, one could argue I was the one who put her life in danger in the first place. I was the one who rammed the police cruiser she was in. I was the reason the police arrested her in the first place because I pulled her into this convoluted mess.

"Should I really get brownie points when I was the cause of all of this?"

Adiah sat down on the couch and kicked her feet up on the coffee table, "You're not usually so self-centered. You think the universe revolves around you, now?"

"No, but I think it'll be a hard sell to blame the universe for all the ways I've interfered with Corinne's life."

"It is obvious to me that you were put into that girl's life for a reason. Your paths were destined to converge. All the ways you feel like you've disrupted her life were meant to happen."

I sighed. Dropped my shoulders. Adiah was a sage. Born with wisdom and intuition that most would never possess.
