“Are we supposed to believe that?” Malachi hissed. We had congregated without the witches, far enough away to get a small ounce of privacy. “Because I can’t say I’ve grown very trusting of witches lately. And they’re clearly powerful.”

“What’s not to trust?” Lucien replied. “If they wanted your wife dead, they would have killed her already.”

“I’d like to see them try,” I replied.

Adeline linked her arm through mine. “Why did Cordelia leave the coven, anyway? Aren’t witches tight about bonds like that? There’s got to be some big reason.”

We all glanced to where the witches gathered, now talking in hushed voices with Cordelia.

“I don’t see any harm in it for now,” I said. “If they want to join us and follow us back to Rewyth, we might as well let them.”

“You’re too trusting,” Adonis spoke up. “You always have been, Jade. No offense. Jade is the most powerful person in our realm.” He turned to the others. “We can’t risk it.”

Everyone thought on these words. “Adeline?” I asked.

She squinted in thought. “I can’t say I’m a big fan of Cordelia,” she answered honestly, “but she’s protected you before. If she trusts these witches, I think it’s safe. As much as I hate to say it.”

She was right. If these witches wanted to become loyal to me and join us on our journey, we shouldn't get in their way. This was the new world, anyway. The new age. We were supposed to be combining forces and making peace with our enemies all across the world.

Perhaps this was a start.

“Alright,” I announced, breaking away from our group and walking over to the witches. “You’re welcome to join us. But I have one condition.”

The witches waited.

“No violence. No more rivalry with the fae. If your coven wants to join us, that’s fine. But we become one. We do this together, and we do this as a team. Everyone. Is that clear?”

Lenova stepped forward, holding her hand out to me. “Our coven is yours, peacemaker.” She wore a small smirk on her lips, but the words were genuine. A small tickle of my power in my stomach confirmed she was telling the truth.

“Well then,” I said, holding out my hand. “We better get moving. We’ve got a busy day ahead of us.”

Lenova clasped her arm around mine, grabbing hold of my forearm. Her smirk spread to a smile. “Yes, we do.”
