True Motives
LAURENCE
Laurence escorted Emilia to her bedchambers after she finished work for the day. Although she was a regent serving Prince Thessian, she seemed to be fulfilling her duty diligently.
He couldnât wrap his head around her intentions. Why would she go so far for a kingdom that gave her nothing?
Laurence scanned the long, empty hallway. The Queen had no other guards all day long.
Why?
If he was in her position, he would have assigned at least a dozen to watch his back. The only reason to limit the number of people around her was out of lack of trust. He nodded to himself as if he finally glimpsed a piece of her true motives.
Yes. That has to be it.
Giving the hallway one more look, he left his post to find Cali. She had completely forgotten her mission, and he needed to remind her that her master had not changed.
It didnât take long to find his subordinate. Cali was in the armoury, taking stock of the weapons. Laurence rested his shoulder against the door frame and cleared his throat.
Cali turned her head. Upon seeing him there, her expression brightened. âCaptain! What can I do for you?â
âOh, you still remember who your superiors are?â
She frowned. âI do not understand.â
He pushed away from the frame and strode over to her. âWhat is your mission, Dame Calithea Louberte?â
In the blink of an eye, she stood to attention. âTo protect Queen Emilia and keep an eye on the people she meets.â
âAnd what are you doing?â
Cali lowered her head in shame. âI am acting as a temporary Guard Captain, Commander.â
âRemember who you serve, Cali. Another mistake, and you will be kicked out of the elite unit.â
âWhat would you have me do?â
He patted her on the shoulder. âMaintain your current position. Iâll guard the Queen. When I return to Prince Thessianâs side, you will resume your post as her guard.â
âUnderstood.â
Laurence was ready to dismiss her but paused. âDo I look sick to you?â
Her eyes widened with worry as she scanned every inch of him. âNo, sir.â
âHmm.â Could he truly be sick, like Emilia said? He could run for ten miles without stopping for a break and keep up with his daily training.
Unless⦠Is it not a visible disease? Did Emilia See me on my deathbed?
Laurence shuddered. Maybe he needed to start thinking about marriage and offspring as his father had mentioned in his last letter.
âDo you feel unwell?â Cali asked.
âNo. Do not worry about it. Return to your duties.â
With her shoulders slumping, Cali reluctantly resumed counting the swords.
Laurence had to remind himself that dating within the unit would be problematic. It was obvious that Cali liked him, but he had to keep a professional distance between them. Though, not like he could return her affection. She was like a younger sister to him who needed guidance. Romance was not on the table.
