CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
âNow that theyâre gone, would you mind explaining to me what the hell is going on here?â Aubin stalked around the kitchen like a tiger on the prowl. âWhat does Angelo have to do with Chelseaâs disappearance, and us almost sleeping with the fish? Furthermore, why is this the first time Iâm hearing of it?â Aubin bellowed, slamming his fist into the wall.
His action shocked Cassandra, whoâd never seem him so angry before.
âIâm your husband, why on earth wouldnât you tell me someone was out to get you?â He inquired with a scowl on his face, as he strode to the refrigerator and yanked the door open. Aubin then grabbed some frozen cubes, wrapped them in a kitchen towel and iced his injury.
Even from afar, she could see how much his hand had swollen from denting the plaster.
Aubin picked up his wineglass, gulped its content, and shook his head. âWho is this guy? What are you not telling me?â He pinched the bridge of his nose and stared into the direction of the furnace with a blank expression.
Cassandra could tell from his faraway gaze that he was in deep thought. Allowing him to regroup was the least she could do. A moment later, he pulled up a chair for her.
âI do trust you, Aubin. Now more than ever with all my heart,â she assured him, plopping down in the seat. âThe only reason I never told you anything was because this runs deeper than you couldâve ever imagined.â
Copying his action, Cassandra emptied her glass before she continued, âMy sources tell me Lisa is involved in this mess, too.â
Aubinâs drink went down the wrong pipe, causing him to spew the red liquid out. He dabbed at his shirt with a napkin. âWhat? Youâre not making any sense. Make it make sense. What does your mom have to do with this?â
âThis story began a year ago, around the time all those women and children went missing. Remember when I had to fly to Chicago for a private art auction? You couldnât come because of the ton of work we still had to do for our annual fundraiser at Brianâs Sanctuary.â
It was the tenth-year anniversary of their nonprofit safehouse for men, so they wanted to make it extra special by adding performances from local bands and comedians.
âWhile I was there, I was recruited by a man called Khalil to do an inside job at Kas di Glas.â Cassandra sighed and poured herself another glass of wine. âHeâd gotten wind of what had been going on in Curaçao through Samantha DaCostaââwhom you have not metââand wanted me to help bring them down.â
His worried expression made her pull the phone out of her pocket. She showed Aubin a picture of her and the girls at the hotel. âSamantha is the one in the middle. Sheâs a reporter, and also a very good friend of mine. As are the other two ladies with us, Pilar and Milan.â
Giving him a moment to digest the information, she excused herself and went to grab their plates.
