Chapter Twenty-eight

“Ew.” Taylor’s nose wrinkled. “There’s even a knife stuck in his ear!”

“Actually, it’s not George,” Violet insisted. “I’m sorry, honey. Although I know it looks like a dead man. The card is really about you. I mean, your situation.”

Alice folded her arms, wondering how her sister was going to backpedal out of the terrible moment. So far, she seemed to be spinning the wheels in deeper.

“Yes, it does symbolize an emotional crisis, a terrible time in which you’re overwhelmed by emotions. Struggling to find a way forward. Which you just went through when you learned of George’s death.”

Ruby frowned. “I don’t think that’s me.”

“It’s not as bad as it may seem,” Violet said. “If the man would just lift his head up he would see that the waters on the horizon are calm, and the sun is rising.”

“How can he lift his head when he’s dead?” Taylor asked.

“Don’t be so literal,” Violet snapped. “Also, the ten card is the end of the cycle—the cards run one through ten—so good things await. Just ahead you’ll find Aces and the Wheel of Fortune card.”

“I do like Wheel of Fortune,” Ruby admitted. “Though I miss Pat Sajak.”

“Okay. Let’s keep going,” Violet instructed. “Turn over a card for the present.”

“It can only get better, right?” Ruby said as she flipped a second card. “The Moon. A very annoyed moon, looking down at two barking dogs.”

“The moon tells us that everything is not as it seems,” Violet said. “There’s an illusion in this situation. Hidden secrets. Maybe danger and secret enemies. But, Ruby, you know something is going on behind the curtain. Your instincts are right. Your feminine power will prevail.”

“This card is so much more chill than the dead guy,” Taylor said.

“Right,” Violet agreed. “Chill. This card makes sense to me because there’s an investigation going on. There are facts that are still unknown to you. But trust your instincts.”

“Okay, then, last card.” Ruby turned over a card called Strength.

“A woman petting a dog?” Alice said. “It’s quite anticlimactic after the murder card.”

“Geez, Alice, it’s a lion,” Violet said. “She’s subduing a lion because she has strength. Physical and mental strength. This is a wonderful prescriptive card for the future, Ruby. It’s your strength that will guide you through this difficult time.”

Ruby flexed one arm and gave a mock smile over her biceps. “Look at me, a black Rosie the Riveter. Thank you, Violet. Aside from all the daggers in the one card, it was a very nice reading.”

“I can’t take credit or blame for the cards that turn up.” Violet gathered up the cards and straightened the stack. “The tarot speaks its own language. But I’m glad you found it helpful.”

After Violet took the cards back to her bedroom, Alice faced Ruby and asked, “What did we learn from that?”

Ruby shrugged, but Taylor piped right up, saying, “Something is going on beneath the surface. Something dark and mysterious. And we need to find out what that is.”

Alice nodded. “So find the killer.”

Madison put up her hands.
