Chapter Eleven

Istared at my ceiling, trapped by the sheets I’d twisted around my body as I thrashed around in bed. What little sleep I’d gotten had been filled with nightmares involving Darlene Prescott, beasts in the woods, lurking just out of sight, and tiny kittens meowing. A quick glance outside, towards the drapes I’d forgotten to close, confirmed that the sun was coming up, but all I wanted to do was get a few more hours of sleep.

The rustling noises and tiny meows coming from the playpen told me that wouldn’t happen. Jasper grumbled from his spot on the pillow next to me.

“You wiggle more than a fish.”

“Sorry, Jasper. I probably kept you up all night.”

He slid his head back onto the pillow, eyes firmly shut, and sighed. I tugged my legs free from the covers and sat on my bed, head in my hands. My hair was snarled into one big tangle. I’d forgotten to braid it before falling into bed. I thought back to the quiet dinner I’d shared with my friends. I’d picked at my food, ignoring Charlie and Danny’s usual antics, barely even hearing them.

My cellphone trilled from its spot on the nightstand and I grabbed for it, noticing the name on the screen. I swallowed hard and accepted the call.

“Good morning, Mr. Marsburg. You got my message?”

“Morning, Eden. I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that yesterday. From what I’ve heard, you did an admirable job of keeping everyone calm and getting everyone back to the resort safely.”

I hadn’t expected praise, but my boss was a nice man. It still felt wrong to get accolades when everything had gone so wrong.

“I’m so sorry. I had such high hopes for this event.”

“It’s not your fault someone had an allergic reaction and died, Eden. These things happen. I’ve heard from the county sheriff’s office. Apparently, something interesting came up and they want to interview everyone again.”

I sat up straight, heart thudding.

“Really?”

“Deputy Tucker will be at the resort by eight. I’ll be coming in as well to assist with the guests and any issues that might crop up. I think it would be best to set aside the conference room, stock it with some breakfast items, and get the guests from the trip to congregate there.”

I glanced at my watch. We had an hour before the deputy arrived. I’d have to wake the guests and explain what was going on.

“I’ll take care of it, sir.”

“Thanks, Eden. I knew I could count on you. I’ll be in a little after eight.”

I signed off and quickly made the bed around Jasper. He didn’t move as I placed the comforter over his thin shoulders. Luna blinked at me as I went racing by, grabbing some clothes on my way to the bathroom. My thoughts jumbled around in my head as I showered, grateful once again that I’d cut my hair, reducing the time I had to spend getting ready.

I fed the cats and was out the door with forty-five minutes to spare.
