Scientists have declared the birth of a puppy named Snuppy one of the biggest stories of 2005. Of course, Snuppy is a very controversial, but very special pup. He is the first scientifically cloned dog. South Korean cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-Suk took some DNA from the skin cells of a three-year-old male Afghan hound’s ears and replaced the nucleus of mature, unfertilized eggs from a female dog’s fallopian tubes. A yellow Labrador retriever was the surrogate mother. After a normal pregnancy of sixty days, Snuppy was delivered by cesarean section on April 24, 2005. He was the exact duplicate of the adult Afghan from whose ears the scientists swabbed.

Snuppy is not the Korean version of Charles Schultz’s famous Snoopy, the iconic beagle of the popular Peanuts comic strip, but stands for Seoul National University Puppy. Gerald Schatten of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, one of Snuppy’s cocreators, proudly pronounced the pup as normal, healthy, and frisky.

The research team had worked tirelessly seven days a week for three years, hoping to be the first to clone a dog. Scientists had previously cloned sheep, mice, cows, goats, pigs, rabbits, cats, a mule, a horse, three rats, and human embryos for stem cell research. Because dogs have such an unusual reproductive system, no laboratory had been able to clone a canine. The eggs of dogs are released from the ovary earlier than in other mammals, and all previous efforts to clone man’s best friend had resulted in failures.
