Bianca couldnât help but huff as they walked out of Adamâs office. Her ego had been a little bruised by his parting statements, which made her all the more indignant.
âCan you believe the nerve of that guy?â she said to Alison, blowing her hair out of her face. âYou try and do a little good somewhere, and look at the thanks you get.â Bianca shook her head and waved her hands in frustration as she spoke.
Alison smiled at Biancaâs display of righteous fury. âOk, Bianca. Deep breath. You canât let these people get under your skin. Youâll never last here if you do.â
Bianca rolled her eyes and groaned.
Alison laughed. âLetâs take your mind off things. We were headed for the diner, right? Would that cheer you up?â
âMaybe,â Bianca said reluctantly, after a pause. She smiled despite herself.
The diner was only a couple blocks away. By the time the waiter had taken their orders, Biancaâs rage at Adam was starting to subside.
âI havenât been to a place like this in ages,â Bianca said, taking a sip from her water. âI remember I used to go to a diner just like this backââ She stopped herself short. She shouldnât have said that.
âBack where?â Alison asked, thanking the waiter as he brought their food to the table.
Bianca stumbled for an answer. Being in witness protection would take some getting used to. How was she supposed to keep her story straight?
âOh, just back in the day,â Bianca said, waving her hand. âWhen I was a kid, you know. Ancient history. Nothing you would care about.â
Alison laughed. âWhat, were you a spy or something? Little miss secretive, I see,â she said, continuing to giggle.
Bianca returned her laugh nervously. âOh, no, nothing like that. Every little town has a diner like this. It just brings back memories,â she said, hoping to remain vague until she could shift the topic of the conversation.
âSo Iâve been meaning to ask,â Alison said, finishing a bite of her sandwich. âHow did you and Elijah meet? And why alpacas?â
Bianca sputtered over her burger. She hadnât really had time to practice her cover story much since she had moved to Oak Knoll.
âWell, you know, with the alpacas, itâs a funny thingâ¦I canât even really say where it startedâ¦Elijah and Iââ She tripped over her words. Alison stared at her expectantly.
Suddenly, they heard the door slam open. Bianca had never been happier for an interruption. She tried to conceal her sigh of relief.
Alisonâs eyes went wide as she saw who had just stormed into the diner. Bianca started to turn around, but Alison grabbed her arms quickly to stop her.
âDonât look now, but Pauline just walked in. And she looks like sheâs on the warpath. I wonder who sheâs after now?â
They turned to follow Pauline as she stormed through the diner, stopping at the corner booth. âHenry! You have got some nerve!â Pauline was shouting loud enough for the whole diner to be privy to her conversation.
âWho is Henry?â Bianca whispered to Alison as she lifted her coffee cup.
