After we’d been at the ballpark for about an hour, Mark leaned over and asked, “Are you hungry?”

“I am, actually. After that burger at lunch, I’m surprised I have an appetite at all, but I could eat again.”

“Good. Let’s go,” Mark said as he stood up.

“But the game’s not over!”

“Trust me. Come on.” He had Krull tucked under one arm, and I had Sophia resting in the crook of one of mine. Mark took my hand and helped me down the bleachers before he put the dog carrier over his shoulder and grabbed my hand again.

We said our goodbyes, and Mark led me toward the parking lot. Rather than go out onto the asphalt, he turned at the fence and walked along the grass.

“Did you have a good day, Lake?”

“I did. And mostly because of you.”

“Good. Glad to hear it. That means my plan is working.”

“What is your plan exactly?”

“To show you that you deserve the fairy tale, and I’m worthy of giving it to you.”

“Oh, Mark. Of course you’re worthy. I wouldn’t want it from anyone else. You’re going to all this trouble and I . . .”

“You are going to enjoy it and tell our children about it every year on our anniversary.”

There was so much to take in from that one sentence that I just didn’t know what to say. Instead I asked, “Where are we going?”

“To eat.”

“Well, I get that, but unless we’re going to start grazing on grass in the park . . .”

“Trust me, Lake.”

“I do,” I mumbled. There was a gazebo up ahead, and I wondered if he had something planned there. I went through every romantic comedy I could remember but couldn’t guess if that was our destination. As soon as we walked around it, I realized exactly where we were going. “A picnic.”

“I racked my brain trying to figure out another movie you loved that had a picnic and could only come up with one. And let me tell you, when I watched that with the girls, I fucking cried big ass tears. Opening scene, not a dry eye in the place. Kids are going to need therapy thanks to Pixar.”

“Up!”

“Yes, and like I said, their picnic was cute but then there was all the rest, so I wasn’t sure . . .”

“In the first five minutes of that movie, it told a beautiful love story. A realistic one that turned me into a sobbing mess, but a love story nonetheless.”

“Welcome to our first picnic, Lake,” Mark said as he set Krull down on the blanket. There was a large basket that Krull started sniffing around, and when I put Sophia down, she started doing the same thing. “Have a seat, babe.”

I sat down on the blanket and crossed my legs in front of me as Mark knelt and opened the basket. He pulled out containers of food and opened them before setting them between us. Then he pulled out a wine glass and poured apple juice for me with a flourish.
