JACKIE

“Only a few days left, and I get to take my, uh, our son home.” I put coins in the coffee machine and wait for the cup to fill.

My smile can’t get any wider. At the start of all this, the car crash and Jack’s life on the line, I dare not even dream of the day.

I hand the cup to Freddie and throw more coins in for another brew. In the last few weeks, I must have spent a fortune on this machine. I wait and watch the doctors, nurses, and visitors stream by. Hospitals, no matter the day or time, never sleep.

Freddie leads us to the waiting room, which by now, might as well be our living room. He offers me a seat and we both look out onto the hospital garden. The tulips are in bloom. Spring. A renewal. A fresh start. In more ways than one.

“Our son. God, I love the sound of that. And yes, we need to take him home and be a proper family. So much time has been lost where my parenting is concerned. Jackie, I want to make up for it in a big way.”

“How do you mean?” I take a sip.

“Okay, now hear me out.”

“Listening.” Another sip.

Freddie turns to face me. My stomach ties in knots. I force a calm demeanor I don’t feel.

“How ‘bout you and Jack move into my home? The place is massive. Lots of space for Jack to play. Even an indoor pool to help him with his therapy. And when he’s up to it, I have an enclosed ice rink he’ll absolutely love. He can invite his friends over. I can renovate any room you want done to be more kid-friendly. How about it, Jackie? It solves so many issues.”

I look up at Freddie, wide-eyed. I can tell he’s not joking. I blink, several times, trying to digest the offer and calculate the risks and rewards, especially for Jack. But on a personal level, for all three of us.

“Freddie, I don’t know what to say.”

“Just say yes. Listen, I know what you’re thinking. Too much, too soon. But why not jump in with both feet? We both want Jack to have a stable family life with both of us in it. You moving in is ideal in so many ways.”

“And you get to spend more time with Jack.”

“Yes, of course. Maybe this offer is for me, too. But can’t you see the positives for all of us? Even for you and me?”

I look down at my coffee cup and then out the window. So many things to consider.

We both sit there, sip at our brews, and say nothing more for a while. The sun warms us. And even though there is the usual hustle and bustle of hospital life swirling around us, we sense nothing. It’s just Freddie and me sitting in a world of our own, silently weighing decisions that will affect all three of our lives going forward.

“My coffee has gone cold.”

“Mine, too.”

I look at Freddie once more.
