The structure of intelligence

Theorists have developed numerous models of intelligence, owing mainly to the different types of ability they have chosen to include and the different research methodologies they have adopted. It is helpful to think of these different approaches in terms of the classification proposed by Mayr (1982):

Lumpers: models which propose a unitary ‘lump’ of intelligence.

Splitters: models which propose that intelligence comprises a series of distinct abilities.

Hierarchical/intermediary: models which propose that intelligence comprises a number of abilities conceptualised at different levels.
