A brief history of psycholinguistics

Although psycholinguistics (the study of language) as we know it today is still a relatively young subdiscipline within the field of psychology, its beginnings date back to the end of the 19th century. Whilst many of the early Greek philosophers had a documented interest in language, many regard Wundt as the father of modern-day language research at the turn of the 20th century. The study of language has gone through a number of distinct stages or phases of development since then and has slowly evolved into what we would recognise as modern psycholinguistics today (see Figure 8.1).
