Chapter 26: Connecting the Dots

Paro had just finished wiping the pizza grease off his hands when his phone vibrated in his pocket. He sat with Karim in a tiny little place at the corner of Lexington and East 41st. The food was average, but he enjoyed the atmosphere and came often because he found some sort of serenity here. At the back of the place was a table near a window that gave a full view of the Chrysler building; Paro had always found it easy to drift off and enjoy a few moments of peace while he stared at it.

Let’s hope for some good news.

He held up his finger to Karim, who had been recounting a humorous story about a man who could fly but could not swim.

“Hold that thought,” Paro said.

He removed his cell and flipped it open. To his amazement, his people had found something. His presence was requested on site immediately. He needed to head to a parking garage, which was about a fifteen-minute drive away.

What did they find?

“Karim,” Paro said, “I just found I have—”

“Work, yes? Does duty call, my friend?”

Paro nodded. “They found something. They need me there right away.”

“Don’t let me keep you, then.”

“I…I feel bad making you take the subway home. I can pay for a cab if you’d like. Or…you could tag along with me. You might be able to identify something if there’s any link to the incident.”

Paro doubted there’d be any such link, but he didn’t yet want to part ways with the uplifting spirit that was Karim. To his surprise, Paro actually worried that he’d decline, which didn’t make much sense, as Karim’s presence would almost certainly not be needed.

“If you think I can be of some help, of course I will go.”

Paro smiled. “Thank you.”

“And ehm, I do apologize if I went on for too long with my stories. I did not give you the chance to ask of me the questions you wished about the explosion. For that, I am sorry. I lost track of time.”

“Believe me, it’s not a problem,” Paro said. “It was good catching up. Actually, we can always make more time later to talk about what you saw.”

Paro tossed his napkin onto his paper plate, folded it up, slid out of the booth, and then nodded his thanks to the owner before disposing of it in the trash bin and making his way towards the sliding-door entrance and back outside.

There’d been no spots outside the pizza place, so Paro had parked his new black Lexus IS just down the block. Few at the organization knew of his love for cars, but mostly because he didn’t discuss it with them. Actually, as he thought on it, not a single one of them—not even Alana—knew much at all about his personal life.

As he made his way down the crowded street, he wasn’t surprised to see Karim not following behind when he looked over his shoulder. But he didn’t have to think long to know where he’d wandered off.
