NOVA

Nova’s lungs burned as if she’d inhaled pure fire. That could be the only explanation for the utter destruction wreaking havoc under her ribs. Pain suffocated her as she stared at the man she’d let into her home. The man who’d saved her. The man who’d torn down the walls she’d held up since she could remember. The man she’d been stupid enough to fall for. Jude King—if that was even his name. Is he the killer?

He’d had so many opportunities to end her life if that had been his plan. But the killer clearly wanted her to suffer, and what better way to observe her agony than with a front-row seat to Nova’s dumpster fire of a life?

Wary, Nova stepped back until her spine met the cool marble countertop. Her hand itched to grab on to something to protect herself.

I thought I knew him. That he’d bared his secrets to me. But Nova should have known better than anyone how deep and dark a person’s secrets could be. There were things she’d never told a living soul, not even the woman who’d adopted her and become her mother after her own had passed. What did she really know about Jude?

His words flooded her mind, haunting her like ghosts from her recent past.

I’m the one who has so much to atone for.

I’ve killed a lot of people.

After I’ve truly taken everything you have to give will I revel in the mess I’ve made.

Nova’s stomach roiled, vomit climbing her throat.

I should have known better. She sucked in a breath, clinging on to the pain. It would help her through this next part—their inevitable end. Would he try and kill her now? Could she fight him off?

“Who are you?” Her voice was a whisper, but it cut like a knife as she drew back, putting more distance between them.

Regret poured off him in waves. Those hazel eyes, so full of life and hope only minutes before, were now empty and soulless. Maybe they’d always been that way and she’d clung to the delusion that she could actually have a second chance. That she could have her own happily ever after. Yet there she was with another liar. What should she have expected? She’d come from a monster; it was no wonder she was attracted to them. That was her penance for existing. Her fate written before she’d breathed her first breath.

“You know who I am.” Jude’s voice grated.

She shook her head, a humorless hysterical laugh eking from her body. “I know bits and pieces pulled from you while you were stoned out of your mind. But what’s truth and what’s a lie?”

“It’s all truth. Just not the whole of it.”

She scoffed, stepping to the side, testing him. Would he block her exit?

Jude held his palms up. “Let me explain. I was just about to tell you everything—”

“Liar!” Her vision blurred. She angrily swiped at her eyes. He would not see her break. She would not give him that power ever again. “Are you here to kill me too?”

He flinched.
