Chapter Nineteen

Burn, baby! Burn!

—Magnificent Montague

RYAN STEPPED CLOSER, opened his mouth, and inspected his teeth; all were firm and white. And he had all of them still—even after all of the fighting. Ryan shuddered, recalling what he had seen and fought so hard to avoid happening to him. He looked at the few scars on his arms, turned, and looked at the stab wound in his left shoulder. That had been a close one. He was fortunate; Ryan had made it out of prison without being raped, but just barely.

Thoughts of his sister flashed in his mind. Both of them had been nearly raped because of their looks, because of angry, evil men. Still, their appearance had been the lure. She was so pretty. They’d called him Pretty in maximum security prison when he was eighteen, and then again when he was transferred, and Big Bastard had given him that damn name. It was the worst thing you could be called in a place like that. At Supermax, Ryan was no longer the biggest guy. There, he was more like how Thomas had been when he arrived at juvie, smaller, weaker, an easy target. There, his cellmate had also helped to protect him.

Some of the harder men there were like giants. Titans that even Ryan had to look up to see their eyes. Some of those men were scarier than any nightmare he could ever conjure up, worse than any comic book villain. Thomas’s best girlfriend mailed him one new comic each week in juvie with her letters and endless contraband. Thomas’s colorful villains were nothing like the guys with tattoos on their faces, some of them with ink over their entire bodies, but he couldn’t stare. He learned to keep his head down and avoid eye contact; at the same time, he couldn’t be a pussy either.

That was when he knew it was best to not speak, and since he’d already stopped, he just decided to quit altogether. No one in either prison knew he could talk. But if Ryan was honest, he’d ceased after leaving Thomas behind, and what had happened the day they came to transport Ryan up to the prison from juvie. Ryan had lost his parents, he had lost his sister, and he had lost his freedom.

Being forced away from Thomas like that—and the way it had gone down—was worse than all of it. Thomas had lost complete control. The guards could have ripped off Ryan’s arms and legs one at a time, and it would have hurt less than seeing it. Handcuffed, shackled, and unable to do anything other than let the tears slide unchecked down his cheeks as he helplessly watched.

The juvie guards had chased after a fleeing Thomas, who burst through the doors running hard to Ryan after realizing their attempt to distract him from what was happening. Thomas had jumped up and latched himself onto Ryan, who was unfortunately already confined. His two federal prison transport guards, not allowed to interfere with
