CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Skylar
PAPA SEEMS TO think we should be worried that there arenât any Screven soldiers following us. He keeps looking to his rearview mirror, only seeing the third SUV in the caravan with its smashed bumper and bullet holes.
Iâm just glad Iâm not hunkered down in the back of the car next to Cody anymore. After the attack, Hex let him ride in the front vehicle since the danger didnât seem imminent and his main worry was just getting out of the city. Now, Iâm in the back seat with Waverly next to me and Teagan riding in the front passenger side.
I wonder what he thinks about all this. He surely wasnât wanting to get involved with Screven soldiers and thugs.
He doesnât seem upset as he and Papa try to come up with alternative strategies in case things go bad on the way to the northern gate.
âThe biggest concern we have is making sure we can get through the gate before they try it themselves,â Teagan says.
âNo,â Papa says, âthe biggest concern is finding one more legitimate Pass Card. Weâre still short one.â
No one speaks for a long moment, and I canât help but look at Waverly when he says this. Papa looks at her through the mirror, but her eyes stay focused on the bleak horizon through the window. She hasnât said much since we left Vulture Hill. Sure, there were times when she had been quiet and didnât want to talk when we were in our cell, but this is different. Itâs as if sheâs afraid to say anything because of the effect it will have on the future. She is so determined to make sure we make it out with the cure. In all honesty, Iâm not even sure thatâs what needs to happen. So, what if we make it out with the cure? With the current government, we would never be able to get it to enough people without it falling into the wrong hands. And if Papa is right, the Screven soldiers hadnât put up much of a fight and were probably ordered not to kill us so they could follow us to our destination.
âWhat do you think, Waverly?â Papa asks after almost a minute of silence.
âI canât tell you what Iâveââ
âI know,â he says, âIâm not asking about your vision of the future, Iâm just asking your opinion about Pass Cards. Itâs something we need to talk about because we may get down to the wire and come up short. There is no solid plan of getting a fourth card. Teagan has his. I have one for Skylar. Then we have the handprint, which may or may not work.â
Waverly doesnât say anything, still staring out the window. Another minute passes, then, âYouâre asking if Iâm willing to stay behind should the four of us reach the gate and weâre still short a card.â Her words come out as a statement and not a question.
âYeah,â Papa says with a sigh. âI trust you enough to
