Chapter Nine

War raged across the white landscape. Screams rent the air. Blood flowed easily. Heads rolled. And the Tainted Sisters kept coming.

“We have to fall back!” Rose heaved, her strength deserting her after holding back horde after horde of extremely skilled Sisters pouring out of the Ice Manor.

“Fall back!” Dublin roared even as she swung her right leg like she was kicking a football. The resultant effect was spikes of sharp rock outgrowth erupting out of the ground like a streak to her adversary. The rocks cut right into her, splitting her down her middle and killing her instantly.

The din of battle commingled with the thick black substance suffused the air. Most of the Tainted Sisters attacked with their traditional Levitator powers. But a few of them Levitated darkness, wielding it like a sword, capable of many great and horrible things.

Peter moved like lightning. Up to the skies and down to the battle in glorious white bursts of electricity. His eyes were submerged behind streaks of lightning, as were several parts of his body. These all were accented by spurts and sparks of fire. It was his midway state, and he rocked it like a celebrity rocked Gucci.

Peter destroyed as many Tainted Sisters as he could. He was superior to them, plus he was capable of flight. But the Tainted Sisters who wielded darkness were another story. They could vanish into darkness one moment and reappear behind you another moment. Some could soar into the air in their incorporeal state, materialize and dagger you in the back, before vanishing again.

They were sneaky, swift, and deadly. Peter had to keep moving to keep them guessing—all the while, he wreaked havoc.

But that changed nothing. Rose’s five-thousand-woman army was nothing compared to what lay behind that Ice Manor. And while this wasn’t the first battle, nor was it the second battle they’d fought since they arrived at the Manor wall last night, it certainly was the fiercest.

Peter hovered in the air for a moment, taking in the Ice Manor. Another wave of Tainted Sisters came out through the broken walls. This was the umpteenth wave this night.

“Die… Cloud Rider…” whispered the ethereal voice of the black smoke behind Peter.

Peter moved at lightning speed, swirling around the black smoke as it materialized with a dagger to the back of where Peter had a moment hovered. As Peter came around, he already had a lightning bolt in his hand. Peter’s maneuver took him only a split second. He struck the Tainted Sister just as she realized that he had moved.

The lightning cut through flesh and bone and erupted out of her chest, pushing out almost a gallon of blood as it did. The Tainted Sister screamed even as every last incorporeal part of her solidified. And then she fell twenty stories to the ground. By the time she splashed into the white, bloody battlefield, she was already dead.

Peter descended like a thunderbolt. He landed in the midst of a group of four Tainted Sister. He roasted one with fire, while a hurricane sent another one up into the air.
