Chapter 10

I took the teacup in my hands and sipped from it despite my stomach being in huge, tangled knots.

After we’d arrived back at the castle, Haujin had May lead the princesses, Taifu, and me to a tea room near the edge of the palace. Floor-to-ceiling windows covered the entirety of the back wall, and through the glass I could see the mixed colors of the approaching dusk in the sky. The back gardens stretched out across the land, and roughly fifty yards into the bloomed flowers was the ancestor shrine.

The stone structure resembled a gazebo in size, and the architectural details were beautifully crafted with gold and dark metal. There was a second story to the shrine, and there were three small, rectangular windows on each side from what I could tell. Warm candlelight filtered through the archway into the shrine, but it was too dark to see inside from here. There was a warm and welcoming energy about the structure, though, and I wondered how many ancestors resided in the elegant temple.

There was a sudden knock at the door, and Haujin stepped through along with an older woman and two middle-aged men in uniform I didn’t recognize.

The woman, though she was slightly wrinkled with years of wisdom in her light, opaque eyes, was still beautiful in her own way. She was about Ariana’s height, and she wore a simple beige robe with black edges that fell nearly to her feet. There was a satchel on her hip, and she smelled of lavender and sage. Her long, dark hair was pinned into a bun on the back of her head with a golden clip, and jade pearls hung around her neck.

The taller of the two men was a beast of a person. He was as thick as a tree and stood almost seven feet tall. He carried a sword on his hip, and the hilt and sheath alone were some of the finest handcrafted pieces I’d seen on a royal guard. The man had no hair and a round face, and his dark eyes were kind. Though the man was intimidating in his physique, he had a calm aura about him, and he looked like a real gentle giant.

The other guard, on the other hand, was much closer to Danny or even Rachel’s height, but he was just as stocky and radiated Napoleon energy. His eyes were narrow as he looked around beneath thick eyebrows, and his hair was pulled into a neat top bun that was common for men of this region. The shorter man walked with a gait just short of a waddle, but despite his short stature, I knew without a doubt he could easily kick my ass.

Well, L.A. Joe’s ass, anyway.

“No shit, look who it is!” Taifu stood up and walked toward the men.

“Ah, Taifu, it’s wonderful to see you again, my friend,” the much larger of the two new men said before he wrapped Taifu in a large hug.

“I can say the same, Chan!”
