7 Into the Crystal Cage

Indigo screamed all the way down as she fell through the hole in the earth hidden by overgrown grass. She landed on her back with a thud, knocking the air from her lungs. Fortunately, she had landed on a patch of springy moss, which cushioned her fall. She lay stunned for several moments then slowly opened her eyes and gazed around her. She was astonished to find herself in the middle of an unbelievably gorgeous crystal cavern. It looked as though she had fallen into the center of a brilliant geode as the walls of the cavern were lined with exposed crystals of every imaginable color. Though the hole admitted little sunlight from above, the cavern was, nonetheless, aglow with a soft, iridescent light caused by the reflection of the surrounding crystals. Indigo had seldom seen anything so beautiful in her life. As the breath returned to her lungs, she sat up warily, gazing around in awe at the remarkable cavern.

Carefully, she got to her feet, checking to see if she had broken any bones in her long fall. Fortunately, she had sustained nothing worse than a few bruises and scratches. Still dazed, she stood a moment, gazing at the glittering crystal cavern, unthinking of anything other than the beauty that surrounded her.

She was startled out of her trance by the sudden appearance of Bijou, who zoomed down the hole and hovered in front of her face. "Bijou!" she exclaimed in surprise. "Where am I?"

The bat put a webbed finger to his lips, warning her to be quiet. Then he pointed urgently at something behind her.

Before Indigo could turn around, she heard a terrible rattling and scraping sound that sent fear coursing through her. Whirling around, she was horrified to see what appeared to be a giant, slumbering dragon. The rattling had come from a massive chain that was coiled around its neck. The dragon was moving restively in its sleep, causing the chain to rattle.

Indigo caught her breath as she stared at the huge, slumbering beast. Clearly, this was no ordinary dragon with scaly green lizard skin. Instead, this creature looked as if it had been forged from the crystalline walls of the cavern. Its skin was almost translucent and gleamed with a purplish glow. In place of ugly scales, it had rows of beautiful amethyst crystals.

Indigo gasped in terror as the dragon opened one large golden eye to stare at her. "Bijou, help me!" she whispered.

Equally alarmed, the bat grasped hold of her arms and attempted mightily to lift her from the ground. Fiercely, he fluttered his small webbed wings and, summoning all of his strength, struggled to hoist her into the air. Slowly, Indigo's feet began to lift from the ground. Unfortunately, the bat was simply not large enough to raise her up more than a few inches. Despite his best efforts, he lost his grip on the much larger girl, causing Indigo to tumble back to the ground with an involuntary cry.

Immediately, the dragon's other golden eye popped open.
