Chapter Eight

Meredith

Meredith honestly had no intention of so much as exchanging a word with Amir again. She could have just breezed by him in the corridors, ignored him when he passed by her on the way to Dan’s office, looked away when she saw him in the street heading into the WIRE studios.

But that wasn’t how it worked with the two of them. She could see that much. Every time she caught a glimpse of him in the studios, she felt as though her whole world tilted on its side. How was she meant to navigate this? The way he looked at her, it was as though he was staring deep down into her soul. She could feel his gaze burning into her body, imprinting itself on her, as though when they had slept together they had formed so unbreakable a bond.

Yet, she did her best to ignore it. So, she had feelings for him. So what? It had been one night, that was all, nothing more than that. Just some fun. She was only a little dizzy for him because it had been such a long time since she had actually been with anyone. He was fun, he was cute, he was good in bed. That was where it ended. Or at least, that’s what she told herself every time he caught her eye in the corridor and the two of them would just stare at each other for a long moment.

The days passed, and Meredith was sure the two of them had managed to get away with their little dalliance without anyone catching on. Maybe she was even starting to move on as well. Wouldn’t that have been something?

But then, as she was changing out the grounds in the espresso machine in the meeting room, she heard the door click open. She sighed, sure that it was going to be Dan, and she braced herself for the inevitable chewing-out she was about to get.

“I’m just taking care of it now—”

That’s when she looked up and saw Amir standing opposite her. Her heart stopped. What was he doing here? She gulped her words back down and tried to control herself.

“Meredith,” he greeted. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“No, it’s fine,” she replied at once. “I was just . . . I didn’t . . . I thought we were—”

“I don’t want to keep you from your work,” he explained. “I just wanted to ask you . . .” He paused, his dark eyes taking her in. “I wanted to see if you would accompany me for another night out. I don’t have long left here; they’ve finished shooting my segments now and everything, but I hoped we could have one more night before I go. Just the two of us.”

“I would love that,” Meredith blurted out without a second thought. “Where? When?”

“Tonight?” he suggested. “And I’ll send a car around to your place to pick you up.”

“That sounds perfect,” she agreed at once.

“Wonderful,” he replied, flashing her that devastating smile.
