Chapter Twelve

“How did you end up here?” Gavin asked Morris after he’d been released from a cell in the Crimson Wake’s brig. The ship was much larger than the Ebon Drake, and the cells were made out of metal bars instead of wooden walls.

“The queen found us an’ I was the only one clever enough to join up with her crew.” The cabin boy’s voice was as smug as his smile.

“So you’re a mutineer twice over,” Gavin said blandly. He wasn’t any more impressed with the young scamp now than he had been when they’d first met on Marcas’s ship.

“You’re real lucky for a redhead. Lucky I’m under Her Majesty’s orders not to knock your teeth in,” Morris said and then spat on the stairs in disgust as they walked up.

“Still pining after Captain Drake then?” Gavin was unsurprised, even given the mutiny. It was a cheap shot to take at the boy, but he made an effort to crush any vindictive feelings that might have powered his jibe. What he’d done with Marcas while they were on the island was of no consequence now. With the island far behind them, he was unsure how he felt about the pirate. There was more hope of returning home, which meant he would eventually have to tell his father what he knew about his captors. He supposed he could lie to his father and blame the entire kidnapping plot on the Crimson Queen, but he didn’t want to lie to his father any more than he wanted to be responsible for the hanging of Marcas’s sister.

Gavin was so wrapped up in his own thoughts that he didn’t notice Morris hadn’t bothered to answer his question.

“Did you know that the Crimson Queen and Captain Drake were siblings?” he asked as they ascended the final flight of stairs to the main deck of the ship.

“Yeah. Her Majesty told me the first day I was her cabin boy,” Morris said. “They look like brother and sister so it’s not surprising. Oh and I always heard Angus Drake had a daughter what tried to save his life in his final duel.”

“But she lost her eye, and he lost his life…” Gavin recalled the story quite clearly now that Morris mentioned it. He never would have thought to connect the most well-known female pirate of the day with Angus Drake’s swashbuckling daughter.

“Tha’s right. She’s got a nice eye patch though; did you see? It’s all encrusted with gems. I think it makes the queen look even more like royalty.”

Before Gavin could reply, they’d crossed the deck and stood at the ornately carved and painted doors to the captain’s cabin. Morris knocked three times and then announced who he was and his business. The door swung inward to reveal a tired-looking Marcas and a lavish cabin interior.

“Gavin, come in,” Marcas said, gesturing to the cabin with the glass of what could only be rum in his hand. He scowled at Morris. “Maggot, fetch my coat.”

Gavin hesitated to enter the cabin, not wanting to be in the middle of any altercation.
