Chapter 14

Raine

It was Saturday morning, and Alex and I would be meeting up with our friends at Mall of America. I got ready and hopped into Alex’s car. While on the road, we chatted about our families and school.

Suddenly, Alex brought up the subject of Chase again.

“So what do you think?” Alex asked quietly. “Do you think you might want to give him a chance?”

There was a moment of silence.

“Sure,” I said finally. What better way to get over him then to go out with Chase?

“You do?” Alex seemed stunned by my reply.

“Yep. He seems like a nice guy. Maybe we could start out by just exchanging numbers. I just want to take things slow with him.”

“Great—he’ll be excited to hear that. I’ll text him and let him know when we get to the mall.”

We got there a little early, so we sat in the lobby and waited for the rest of the group. Alex grabbed his phone and started texting Chase. Alex’s phone buzzed. “I just texted Chase and told him. He texted back and said great, he can’t wait to hang out with you at the mall.” Alex informed me.

“Tell him I’m looking forward to it too.”

His jaw clenched and he looked down at his phone to texted Chase what I’d said. His phone buzzed again. “Chase texted great, I can’t wait.”

“Thanks, Alex,” I declared. “You’re a good friend.”

“That’s what friends are for.”

“No, I mean it. I thought it was going to be hard making friends and getting adjusted to a new school and everything. But you’ve really been there for me and made it an easy transition. I really appreciate everything.”

He just shrugged. “It’s nothing. I’d say you did it all by yourself, but okay.”

We heard someone calling us. I looked up and saw Cici, Tracy, Janette, Nika, and Adam walking toward us.

The girls scurried over and gave me a hug. Adam gave me half a hug and fist bumped Alex.

Then I heard someone call out my name. It was Chase, Tyler and Oliver followed closely behind.

I could hear giggling from the girls. They were nervous and excited that Alex and his buddies were going to be hanging out at the mall with us. Tracy grabbed Cici’s arms and was jumping up a little in excitement. Nika was biting her nails. Adam didn’t look too thrilled and stuffed his hands into his jacket.

“Tracy, play it cool okay?” Cici murmured, as the three guys sauntered over to them. Tracy swallowed hard and nodded. Adam scowled. I suspected that he a crush on Tracy but was too shy to do anything about it.

Chase, Ollie and Ty said hi and fist bumped Alex and Adam and hugged the girls. Tracy had a dreamy look on her face and Adam’s scowl deepened.

Chase approached me. “I’m asking for your permission, Raine. May I have a hug?” he asked with a wink and flashed his megawatt smile.

“How about half a hug now and the other half later?” I teased.

“Deal, I’ll take whatever I can get,” he said with a grin.
