I want to point out that this curve is a guide. Not everyone will experience anger during the awareness stage. You will encounter people who are excited about the change and never feel anger or fear when confronted by the change. When that happens, take a minute to celebrate! For those who do experience the standard stages of grief during change though, I have found that this curve provides a good estimate of how the emotional and intellectual stages match up.

Tip

Before we talk about each stage of change, a warning about interpreting the change curve graphic. Although the curve looks smooth and the stages are evenly spaced, this is only a conceptual image. Real life change is much messier.
