CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Leira sat up in bed just as the first light crept into the bedroom. Correk was still asleep, softly snoring with the occasional grunt or grumble, and and his long blonde hair was covering his face. He had an arm lying across her waist and their legs were still tangled together.

She sat up straighter, leaning forward to peer out the window at the sunrise. Something was different this morning. She lightly touched her chest and a crooked smile spread across her face. “Hope,” she whispered. “I have no good reason for it but there it is. I feel hope. How did that happen?”

“Maybe because you did something different.” Correk brushed the hair off his face and slowly opened his eyes, blinking in the growing light. “You reached out to every living thing around you. It wasn’t the Leira Berens show this time.” He laughed lightly and reached out for her, pulling Leira close and wrapping his arms around her.

She protested but was still smiling, finally letting herself rest against his chest, her head just under his chin. “It was never my show,” she said, gently poking him in the ribs. “It was all I knew. When I was a detective, Hagan was there for me, and Estelle but I was mostly alone.” She placed the flat of her hand against his chest. “By my choice. I get that now.”

“I take credit for that part. Oof! What?” Correk laughed easily, pressing her head down against his chest.

“The question is, what do I – I mean ‘we’ do now?”

“There you go.”

“Okay, Fixer, give me a second.” She pushed against his chest and sat up, the sunlight streaming in as the sun rose higher. “We need everyone to help us now. Not when a battle starts.” She shrugged and rubbed her hand across his belly. “So obvious now. We call a meeting and get everyone we can to come to it. Ariana even, if she’ll do it.”

“That would be interesting.”

“We can make everyone check their weapons at the door,” Leira said with a chuckle. “Wands included.”

“Spare wands included.”

“That’s a thing?”

“That’s a thing. Call the Willens and all the smaller magicals too. They know more than most and can go places undetected that none of us can travel.”

Leira’s eyebrows went up, wrinkling her forehead. “A house full of Willens and trolls. Is there enough food in DC?”

“And pixies. Maybe I could invite my dad.”

Leira’s smile softened and she looked at Correk, brushing a piece of hair out of his face. “That’s a very good idea. We will call everyone together. Today. The major players. But how do we reach everyone this fast?”

“Leave that to the Fixer.” Correk sat up on an elbow and rubbed his face.

“I see we’re talking about ourselves in the third person now. I suppose that was bound to happen. Whoa! Hey!”

Correk pulled Leira back toward him and rolled till he was on top of her, smiling and pinning down her arms. “The invites can wait for a little while.”

“Now you’re talking.
