Chapter 17

I hadn’t been expecting Gram to turn her greeting of the morning sun into a full forty-five-minute yoga session.

Surprisingly, it had been fun, but by the end of it, a couple early risers had already walked past with their dogs or jogged by on their morning runs. A ghost or two had also stopped by to watch the spectacle, although they remained on the sidewalk as they looked at Gram and me. I’d have to reconsider either my cutesy pajama choices or move this into the backyard where fewer people could see me. Or both.

Gram wiped the slight sheen off her forehead. It was going to be a hot, humid day in Heartwood Hollow. “All right, now you can bring your crystals inside.”

“What about the ones in the garden?”

“I’ll remind you next week to dig them up. Then you can give them a quick rinse with intent or wipe them with a soft cloth to physically clean them. They’ll already be cleansed. After that, do the same with them that you’re doing with these now. Think you can manage that?”

I took a six-inch fluorite tower from its overnight position in one hand and a pyrite cluster in the other. Cracking a smile, I said, “Only if you can get the door.”

It took several minutes, but I eventually brought all the porch crystals inside. The entire time, Saffy studied my movements back and forth onto the porch as I placed the crystals on the coffee table for the moment. Her head swiveled this way and that in an almost comical manner, her gaze following me throughout the exercise. Had she been watching me doing yoga in the front yard too? Maybe it was a good thing she couldn’t talk. I bet she’d have had an opinion about it.

When I placed the last crystal down, Saffy darted over to the coffee table. She stood up on her hind legs to get a closer look at the stones.

“She feels the strengthened energy of them too, no doubt,” Gram started. “You’ll want to put your spheres where she can’t bat them around or knock them off something in the process. Well, that last part is for all crystals. A lot of them may look hard, but they’ll crack or shatter completely if you drop them. Sterling learned that the hard way several years ago.”

As if trying to press her luck, Saffy reached for the malachite.

“Saffy, down,” I said at the same time Gram chuckled.

“Such a sassy cat.”

I put my hands on my hips. “Okay, so where do I put these?” I couldn’t imagine having enough room for them all.

“The ones that were over your doors and windows can go back where they were as you think about warding the house, protecting it from those spirits you don’t want inside. We can find places to put those that are new to you.” As I put back the points that had been resting above my windows and doors for the last few years, Gram instructed
