I’d intended to stay up until Laney returned, but my exhaustion eventually got the better of me. The following morning, I woke up with a Xavier-shaped dent beside me in the bed and a message saying that he’d had to leave a couple of hours earlier because his boss had called and ordered him to come home at once.

Oh boy. Had the Grim Reaper found out about the vampire attack? It had only been a matter of time before he did, but the Reapers and the vampires got on about as well as manticores did with everyone except Cass. Generally, the Reapers held the opinion that the vampires were cheating the laws of death, which they effectively were, but that didn’t mean I envied Xavier for having to deal with both.

I replied to his message, asking him to let me know how it went with his boss, and then left my room to check if Laney had come back. I crossed the corridor with some trepidation; if she’d left town last night, she might not have even known about the attack unless Evangeline had decided to ambush her on the way back.

One way to find out. I knocked on the door a couple of times before I heard Laney stir on the other side. “Whaaa?” she asked, her voice slurred.

“Hey—everything okay?” I called to her.

“No, someone just woke me up.” She groaned. “I hope it’s urgent.”

“Did you hear?” I pushed the door inward. “Someone got attacked by a vampire on campus last night.”

She sat bolt upright in bed. “No. I sure didn’t hear that. Who?”

“Dr Hayes,” I said. “She was bitten in the same lab where Professor Booker died. Someone called the police, thinking she was dead, but Xavier’s Reaper senses didn’t pick up on anything, so he went to find out the truth.”

“Whoa.” She fell back onto the pillow. “That’s messed up. Have they caught the vampire yet?”

“No, which is why I wondered if Evangeline had told you,” I said. “She might not be in a good mood tonight. Fair warning.”

“Like every day ending in y.” She yawned. “Dr Hayes… which one was that?”

“A grumpy alchemist,” I replied. “She won’t be thrilled to wake up as one of the undead, I’m betting.”

“Who is?” Her eyes closed. “Thanks for telling me. I’ll tread carefully around Evangeline later.”

“Good.” I backed out of the doorway. “See you later.”

A snore indicated she’d already fallen back asleep. After closing the door to her room, I went back to my own, where I showered and got dressed.

I descended the stairs to find a bleary-eyed Estelle eating cornflakes in the kitchen while Sylvester perched on the table next to her and stole pieces of cereal when she wasn’t looking. Someone—probably Aunt Adelaide—had also left out a plate of toast and a pot of coffee.

“Hey.” I pulled out a chair and joined Estelle. “Have you heard from campus yet?”

“Yeah.” Estelle yawned. “The police were there until late questioning people, but they didn’t find the vampire, whoever it was.
