“Every day the battlefield nears its destination.” An Italian boast that the army was heading toward Egypt following the Italian offensive from Libya launched in September 1940. In reality, the Italians advanced 65 miles (104 km) and then stopped. In December 1940, the British counterattacked and routed the Italians in a humiliating defeat. For the Italian Army, it was a foretaste of the military disasters that were to come in the war.

“Without the March on Rome. No March on Moscow.” A poster heralding Italian participation in Operation Barbarossa, linking it to Mussolini’s March on Rome in 1922 and the Nationalist victory at Madrid in 1936. In fact, the “March” was a myth created by the fascists for propaganda purposes. Mussolini was asked to form a government before the march began. In this poster, an Italian fascist Blackshirt is attacking the Russian bear. The Italian forces that took part in Barbarossa were woefully short of antitank guns, tanks, and motor transport.
