Chapter 16

Speeding down the road, and taking his cue on directions from Ernie—who thankfully had performed in Winnsboro, too—Nassar filled Gillian in on what he’d found in the least gory way he could.

“She’d been down there for a while, but we did manage to I.D. her. Her name is apparently Vicky Cushman, and she’s from a nearby town called Sumter. Lived there all her life—she was about twenty—and apparently had no magical abilities at all.”

Sighing, Gillian wondered, as much as she hated this.

“So maybe he’s killing off the non-magical children first?”

If she tried very hard, she could pretend that none of this had anything to do with her and was all an entirely academic conversation about a thoroughly fictional topic.

“It could be.”

While he didn’t say it, they of course had no way of knowing who he might have dumped in the swamp.

After a moment, he added, “Gillian, I want you to put the strongest protection spell on yourself you can think of. Hecate knows, I’ll be doing the same with you, too. It’s possible that his plan is to drag you to this place in order to dispose of you.”

As the same, dread thought had occurred to her, Gillian sighed, starting to wrap spells around herself and wondering whether coming from a magical legacy on her mother’s side made her lucky or not.

“The S.O. told me one more thing,” Nassar went on. “Apparently, Marjorie, the first victim, was in London as part of a bargain bus tour around England.”

Gillian tried to put this together.

“So, he was following them to where they were, not dumping them there later.”

Which had been true for Anna, the second victim, as well.

Nassar nodded, and she worried again that it might have been her spells on them the killer was tracking them by.

The moment was so serious, even George and Ernie said nothing, simply watching from the backseat.

The silence was only broken when Gillian’s bluetooth started ringing, playing the strains of “Witchy Woman.”

“You better answer that. It’s my grandmother,” Gillian warned, still wrapping herself with spells. “If you don’t, crazy demonic serial-killing fathers may be the least of our worries.”

Looking unhappily resigned to his fate, Nassar pressed a button, and immediately Baba’s voice was shouting, “What’s going on? My protection spells on you are buzzing so badly they’re giving me a headache.”

Sighing, Gillian wondered where to even begin.

“Can’t talk long, granny. We’re trying to prevent a murder.”

The silence on the other end told her everything.

“But, briefly, it seems my unknown father may be a demonic killer and is in the process of liquidating his whole family, probably including me if he gets his chance. He’s already . . .,” she went on before Baba could interrupt. “. . . killed at least one of my sisters.”

Because Baba was Baba, there were no exclamations of surprise or need to repeat herself. Instead, she heard Baba cracking her knuckles, which was never a good sign.

“Let me know if you need me there. I haven’t punched a demon in the face in much too long.
