Chapter Twenty-Three

Poseidon

Lani gasped, her fingers digging into my skin. The tiny nails did nothing to pierce my impenetrable surface. The more she stared, the more I feared she wouldn’t want to be with me anymore.

Was she disappointed in who I was? A god that hid himself from the surface of the world? I was also nothing like I was depicted in human stories. I was never the tormentor of the seas, the ruler of the oceans. I was soft.

Lani’s eyes drifted, her gasp quickly turning into light pants.

“Lani, breathe, it’s alright,” I said. I tried to keep my voice soothing, giving her the same voice she was accustomed to. “Lani, it’s still me. I’m still the same. I just look like this. This is what I really look like,” I choked out.

Lani’s heart rate slowed, and her eyes rolled in the back of her head. I pulled her over my lap, holding her like an infant, and rocked her.

I knew how bodies worked. I’d worked with them countless times, creating new and amazing creatures; and I was no stranger to human kind. Her body shut down, unable to handle the stress. And who was I kidding? She saw Silas, then me, on top of all the beautiful, sensual things we had just done together.

I let out an exasperated breath, running my fingers through my hair. Shit, I let her do those things to me before she knew who I was.

Did I take advantage?

I picked up my mate and cradled her to my chest. She automatically rubbed her face against me. Her warmth and affection, even while she slept, gave me hope she would forgive me for what I had done.

But I would always remember the explosion of pleasure given to me. I’d replay it a thousand times in my head—her beautiful moans and gasps as she used my body to orgasm. She rubbed herself on my shaft, her arousal too potent for me to tell her to stop. I wanted it, and so did she. I only prayed that she would understand how I couldn’t say no in those moments.

The bond had grown strong the past week. I felt impossibly close to her now. If she wanted to leave me, I don’t think I could ever let her go. I would be like Hades, keeping his mate beneath the surface and never sharing her.

I would decorate her in jewels, dress her in the finest fabrics, let her see the wonders the sea had to offer, and let her learn everything beneath the ocean just like she’d always wanted.

But I knew I could never let her go.

I had never understood the possessiveness Hades and Lucifer had over their mates, but I was getting the idea. I didn’t want anyone around my mate anymore. I didn’t want prying eyes seeing her beautiful body.

When I watched Silas touch my mate, as innocent as it was to just shake her hand, it was enough to show fangs I had not extended in centuries. Silas shared a knowing look, when he saw my dissatisfied face.
