GRAPHIC DESIGN: AN OVERVIEW

Ambica Prakash contributed to the content in this chapter; figures in this chapter were created by Ms. Prakash and her students.

To design means to plan. The process of design is used to bring order from chaos and randomness. Order is good for readers, who can more easily make sense of an ordered message.

—Alexander White, The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type (2002)

White’s succinct description is a great starting point for understanding graphic design. While interior designers are educated to understand that to design means to plan, methods of creating order out of chaos for a reader fall outside of most interior designers’ training and experience. This chapter is meant as an introduction to understanding how “to bring order from chaos” for those without training in graphic design, thereby creating what White calls an “ordered message.”
