Chapter 21

The call came over the radio as Constable Aden Trevarthen was pulling into the driveway of the ramshackle government Housing Commission home.

‘Yes, Damien? This better be good. I took too long to get here as it is. Now the woman–’

‘She’s changed her mind.’

‘What?’

‘The woman rang back to say she didn’t want to proceed with the complaint. Her husband didn’t hit her, she reckons she made it all up.’

‘Let’s see about that!’

Five minutes later Trevarthen was back in the vehicle, fuming. With real domestic violence cases through the roof, fake call outs leached resources away from where they were most needed. If not for the squalid mess inside the house and the fact the woman was clearly drug-addled and hopeless, he would have charged her with wasting police time.

But there were bigger fish to fry. He buckled up, switched on the engine, engaged reverse and gunned the car out of the driveway, narrowly missing a child’s upturned tricycle. An opportunity had opened to assist with the murder enquiry. Detectives Lisbon and Taylor were busy at the marina and Jack had sent a text asking Trevarthen to check up on Rohan Keenan. He flicked the indicator, turned left onto an arterial road, popped on the blues and twos just for fun. Zipping past well-behaved motorists who politely gave way, he made the call, confirmed the man was at home, and made for the residence of the deceased’s brother.
