Chapter Thirteen
With her eyes half closed, Drew languished in the sensory delight that was Wren lying in her arms. She idly ran her fingers through Wrenâs long hair. They lay sprawled out on the sofa with the TV on quietly in the background, but neither watched what was playing. Instead, they had shifted and turned until Drew lay back and Wren had melted into her. Her grandma had gone to bed an hour ago, bidding them good night and hugging Wren close. Now they were alone, content in the stillness.
âThe beat of your heart is going to send me to sleep,â Wren said, stirring a little. âFor a lanky thing youâre surprising comfortable.â
âMust be all the cake I eat, padding me out in all the right places for you,â Drew said. âYouâre welcome to stay here. You can take my bed. Iâll sleep out here on the sofa.â
Wren shifted to catch Drewâs gaze. âYou wouldnât sleep with me?â
âIâd be a gentlewoman and save that for when weâd want to do more than sleep.â Drew tried not to laugh at Wrenâs pouty bottom lip. âBesides, I know weâre not in the most ideal of situationsâ¦â
âYou mean with your grandma sleeping just down the hallway?â
âIt can be something of a mood killer.â Understatement of the century, Drew thought to herself.
âHow many girls have you brought home, Drew?â
Drew thought she heard a hint of jealousy in Wrenâs tone. She had to think back to her last date. It had been a long while ago. âOne here, not counting you. And she never slept over. She never got past the meet and greet.â
âDid Mae welcome her?â
âShe did, but didnât welcome her back. The woman knew of my circumstances and talked around Grandma as if she were deaf or stupid. It would have been funny if it hadnât been so mortifying how she shouted at Grandma like she was senile.â
âSenile is the last thing Mae is.â Wren snuggled back down onto Drew. âI have to ask. Are you usually soâ¦reticent in touching someone?â
Drew sighed quietly. She knew Wren would notice. It was kind of hard to miss for someone as tactile as Wren could be. âI like to get to know someone first, spend time learning about them. I find intimacy a littleâ¦intimidating. I never really learned when it was appropriate to instigate it.â
âYou usually wait for the other woman to touch you first?â
âKind of. I mean, itâs difficult to know when a hug can mean something more. I always err on the side of caution.â Drew laughed at herself. âNot that I have been flushed with much success with partners.â
âYouâre not a virgin though?â
Drew shook her head. âNo, but I could count on one hand and still have fingers to spare how many women Iâve been with.â Drew nervously ran a hand over her hair. âItâs not like my situation is ideal. We could sleep together here. Grandmaâs hearing is not so good that she could hear every moan and scream coming from behind closed doors.
