Chapter Nine
Vordeina glared wilfully at the deportment instructress. “You walk about with three stupid books balanced on your head!” she declared adamantly. “I don’t intend to, I can tell you that!”
“Now, now Vordeina,” coaxed the instructress. “Your father has not spent so much money on your training for you to behave so unladylike. I am sure he would be most displeased, should you return at the end of term, waddling like some overfed duck.”
“Training?” stormed Vordeina. “Training! Do I look like a dog?” A wild look manifested itself in her green eyes, and she tossed her flaming red curls wildly for better effect. “I put up with all that ‘rain-from-the-drain-can-cause-a-nasty-painful-sprain’ garbage. I tolerate needlecraft and domestic science, because I’m so bored stupid here that it helps take my mind off all the ridiculous things you come up with. But if you think I’m going to strut about with three flaming books balanced on my head, you can think again!”
“You must strive to become a lady, Vordeina,” chided the instructress. “It will be important, in later life, to know how to behave in proper society. You must learn to walk with elegance and poise. You must flow into a room, not stomp, like some warmongering dwarf.”
“Look here, you interfering old crow! I don’t want to be a lady, and nothing you can say will induce me to do anything I don’t want to do, okay?”
The instructress’ features hardened. “We can withhold those tickets your father sent for the Rotting Dead concert. I feel it is totally wrong for a young lady to be listening to such raucous drivel, anyway.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Watch me girlie! Your father sent those tickets as a reward for you coming here, and a bad report, I am positive, would swiftly make him agree with whatever we deem necessary.”
“How about just one book, then?”
“Three books - or no concert!”
For a moment, Vordeina looked as if she was about to storm out. But then an image of Eddie Pusseater screaming out the lyrics of Born to be Damned entered her head. She pouted rebelliously, but picked up the books.
An hour later, she sat in her room, contemplating setting fire to the school. She detested her father for sending her here. Although that wasn’t saying much, as she had pretty much hated him in the first place. Her mother had been incarcerated in a home for the mentally insane, because she had disagreed with her father over some political issues. Vordeina couldn’t quite decide which she loathed the most - being here, at the school, or being at home with her father.
Perhaps the worst thing was that she was still going to be here for another two years. By the gods! She would be twenty years old by the time she got out. Almost over the hill, she concluded.
There was a light tap on the door and Vordeina looked up from her gloom. “Yeah? What?”
The door opened and a frail, yet pretty face peered around it. “Hello Vordeina,” greeted Prosthetica, the daughter of the T’carthian Minister for Artificial Limbs.
