CHAPTER 12
HALLIE
âWeâre back!â I called out to Irv the next afternoon.
âLucky me,â he grumbled. He was trying to stuff large bags of shredded cheese and tubs of salsa inside the refrigerator.
Mari ran over to us, her little face crinkling with delight, and gave an excited hello.
âSorry we couldnât come yesterââ Jaye started.
âWhere are our chips?â I demanded, getting right to it.
On the drive over, Jaye had asked me to please bee kind to him. âNai Nai always says âYou catch more flies with honey than vinegar.âââ
âI donât want to catch flies,â Iâd told her. âI want our chips back.â
The bake sale was in a few hours. Jaye told me the story about how sheâd spotted Mrs. Montan in her driveway yesterday, and had gone over and talked her into it. Brilliant!
But we still had to divide the chips into bags, seal them, and stick on labels.
And finish our homework.
I held out my hands to Irv. âChips, please.â
Irv brought them out. I let out a cry of joy. Our chips looked and smelled so good.
Then he pointed Jaye to the stack of the recipe cards on the counter next to his laptop. âYou know what to do.â
Jaye flexed her fingers. And started to type.
âGo, go, go!â I cheered as Jaye finished the first one. âYouâre typing at warp speed.â
Irv watched. âYeah, sheâs fast.â
Then he placed a plate of warm sugar cookies in front of us.
Jaye stopped typing and sniffed. âYum.â
I pushed the cookies away and glared at Irv. âIs this a trick to slow her down?â
He snorted. âArenât you prickly?â
âMe? What about you?â
Meanwhile, Jaye had snatched a cookie. She typed with her right hand and ate with her left. Even though I tried to resist, I ended up eating two.
For a mean guy, he made good cookies.
âSo Henry got punished way worse than I did,â I told Jaye as she typed. âMy parents said he was supposed to set an example, because heâs older. I just have to clean out the garage. And now Henry thinks I owe him crickets to feed his lizard. Can you believe it?â
âShh!â Irv pointed to me. âRule one: no making noise.â
âFine.â I pulled out the labels weâd printed. The label for the front of the bag had our logo.
The label for the back said:
Made in a home kitchen with ⥠for the planet!

1 CRICKET PER CHIP!
